Dateya

Reviewed By Douglas W - New Orleans, Louisiana

While living in Fukushima I asked a local where I could find good rarmen, and this is where he took me. A small place with Seating for 15, but the matriarch of the restaurant decides how full its going to be as she invites groups in on the waiting list one-by-one. The chef prepares each bowl with precision. The pork ramen was 1850 yen, and was fantastic. Get your name on the list, prepare to wait, but prepare to experience something many of the locals won't tell you about.

Umakatei Fukushima Eki Pivot

Reviewed By Ken N - Fukushima, Japan

This sushi restaurant is in the "Pivot" shopping and dining area built under the shinkansen (bullet train) tracks on the west side of Fukushima Station. International guests of Fukushima Medical University (FMU) often stay at the Richmond Hotel, just outside the west exit. When we at the university aren't occupying their time, our guests often find their way to Umakatei, where the staff do a commendable job of overcoming any language barriers. This is a show-and-tell kind of sushi place, with a conveyor belt moving ready-made sushi around the counter, so people can look and take what they want. The staff also accept orders and make fresh dishes on speculation, showing them around with big smiles and big voices, wondering if anyone might like to indulge. This might be perceived as noisy or intrusive, but my impression is that everything is done in fun and in good taste, and no one needs to feel any pressure to take anything more than what they want. As an aging academician, I am a light, slow eater, and the staff are just as happy with me as they are anyone else with a bigger appetite.
