Perfect seaside getaway

Amazing weekend with my 7yr old son. The Hotel was perfect for our first trip away. Perfect location, car parked outside, FRIENDLY staff that couldn’t do enough to help and always had a smile. We throughly enjoyed the breakfast selections and my son said he felt like a king !! Great lounge that looks out to the seafront, we spent most the day Sunday in their and had the most FANTASTICALLY YUMMY afternoon tea which is a must !! Our room was perfect and serviced daily. We didn’t go into the bar for the nightly entertainment but it sounded fab from our room across the hallway and guests seemed to enjoy it too added bonus was it didn’t go on too late so the hotel went quiet for a good nights sleep before breakfast. Nice option of ordering a packed lunch for the journey home which again was yummy and a nice touch. Already looking at dates to go back and visit again.

Esplanade Hotel

The Esplanade hotel is a pleasant hotel ideally situated and set on a level seafront position just a short walk to the sandy beach, picturesque harbour, pier, shops and brand new cinema. Paignton is right in the heart of Torbay and is an ideal resort for all ages as well as a great base from which to explore South Devon and the surrounding area. Within the hotel, the south facing Sun Lounge and Harbour Bar Lounge offer stunning views across ‘the Bay’ and the attractive Riviera Suite provides a warm and friendly atmosphere to enjoy the entertainment. The Esplanade also offers the opportunity to upgrade your standard room to one with a sea view (charges apply) and the stunning view on a sunny day is certainly worth it!

Great location on the sea front close to the harbour, this hotel has much promise but sadly does not deliver.

Visited the hotel on the long bank holiday weekend and as the hotel was fully booked we had one of the last downstairs rooms. The room itself was pleasant although the bathroom was tiny but the path from the main reception down a flight of very steep stairs and along a dark and damp smelling corridor. The view was of the car park and as we were below street level it was basically looking at the ankles of people in the car park. The net curtains had a rip in them. Wifi is not free and is poor quality. Breakfast was included but was a chaotic affair with food constantly running out. The service team seemed poorly trained and disorganised with dirty plates left for long periods and tables eventually cleared but no new settings placed on the table mainly guests had to constantly ask for cutlery. Food was average quality with a small variety. Layout of the room where breakfast is served is poor and adds to the chaos. The hotel seems very dated with the main bar recently decorated but the rest of the hotel needing redecorating. The exterior of the hotel is very dated and needs to be repainted and cleaned. Overall an average hotel but due to the high price of the room (£100+) would consider this a poor hotel for the cost.

Great location, friendly staff

Reviewed By rorypope2004

Stayed here for my Grandads 85th birthday, in total there were 17 of us staying for the weekend. We all arrived at different times, but when my group arrived (3 of us/2 rooms) the lady behind the counter was very helpful letting us know where our rooms were and where everything in the hotel was. To comment on the rooms is rather difficult as from the 5 different rooms I saw they were all slightly different. For example, 1 had a balcony and 1 had a dressing room. So for this reason it's difficult to say anything about the rooms as it looks like it's pot luck as to what room you get as to what layout you get. What I will say is that all the rooms were clean and tidy, all had TV's, kettles, coffee and tea for if you wanted one before going down to breakfast or before bed. The 'worst' room (that I was in) was more than good enough for me, plenty of space and clean. If I was sharing with someone the changing area would have been a huge plus but I wasn't so not an issue. The groundfloor is the main area for everything such as the gym, swimming pool, bar area and restaurant area. From the bar you can go to the outside area which has stunning views of the sea, the pier, Torquay and Brixham (sea photos). The swimming pool was a good enough size to have a swim in and also had the sauna, steam room and hot tub in the same area aswell as a couple of tables to sit at. Unfortunately the hot tub wasn't working but that wasn't an issue for us. I could see rhe pool being a bit cramped if there were a few different groups in there at the same time but we never had this issue. On the 1st floor there is also a little lounge area with sea views, which we used when the weather wasn't too great. The beach and pier is just a short walk away with a massive grass area back from the beach for those who aren't keen on sand. On the Sunday we had a big family meal together where the hotel put us in our own room (not sure if this was to give us our own space or if it was their way of keeping us from other guests ?), either way it was fantastic for us. It allowed the kids to be kids without having to be told to sit down and it made it easier for us adults to move around freely talking rather than feel like we had to stay seated. The staff were great with all ages ranging from 4 upto 85 and pretty much everything in between, we couldn't have been easy but nothing seem to be a problem. Would I stay here again, absolutely!!! Would I recommend it, to a selected few. This hotel isn't for everyone and not everyone would appreciate the older decor and feel (I do not mean dirty and run down). However if you are OK with/looking for a hotel that has not been refurbished to keep up with trends that has an older feel to it you will probably love it here. To all the team at Redcliff, thank you for making my Grandads birthday special and looking after us all it js very much appreciated. If you made it this far through the review you'll probably booking. Enjoy your stay and hopefully the sun stays out so you can enjoy the outside area ☀️?.
