Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge sits at a 7000-ft altitude on a magnificent ridge with stunning views across the rugged landscapes and beyond to the Virunga Volcanoes chain. Ten luxurious cottages and three exclusive suites sit above the Bwindi Forest canopy with distinctive elegance and startling luxury amid trees, flowers, and shrubs. Locally styled furnishings grace the spacious rooms, and light fills the space from private viewing decks above the steamy forest swath. The Lodge has been named Uganda's leading Safari Lodge at the World Travel Awards in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 and prides itself as a community and conservation powerhouse. It runs on solar power and rain-harvested water for operations. It's constructed from volcanic rock deposits and reusable material and employs from the local communities for sustainability. A stay at Nkuringo is like visiting grandma's warm, loving cabin with luxury amenities. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is a perfect base for gorilla trekking adventures in Uganda, and our reviews show of it.

Amazing property and views!

Reviewed By wes222

Absolutely amazing! We stayed four nights in one of the luxury suites (named Kashasha), and it was fantastic! The views from the lodge (and also the room) are unparalleled. The staff was extremely friendly (a special thanks to Wesley and Rosemary), and they made sure to make you feel at home and attended to all of your needs. The online pictures of the property do not do it justice. Sitting on top of the mountain overlooking the valleys, volcano peaks, and lush greenery and gardens was absolutely amazing. You can spend several days just staying onsite and enjoying the property. The food was also excellent - we never had a bad meal or went hungry. Would definitely recommend this lodge.

The Engagi Lodge

Quiet and tucked away

Reviewed By MelanieW1582

Engagi lodge was our first stay on our tour and we were only booked to stay one night unfortunately. The Room: We had a private lodge that was clean, spacious bathroom with hot water and mosquito net that they prepped for you while you enjoyed dinner. They have electricity in the room for lights, but they do not offer enough to allow for you to charge phones, cameras or anything like that in the room. They have the charging station in the lounge up at the main area. The service: The staff was wonderful for our short stay. They carried all of our luggage for us and even dusted it off since it was a bit dirty from the dirt road drive in! The staff prepped our breakfast at 5am to allow for us to have an early start for our gorilla trekking adventure! We weren’t there long for us to build much of a relationship with the staff but all were wonderful while we were there. The food: The best pumpkin soup of the trip! Portion sizes were appropriate for breakfast and dinner and our take-away lunch was more than enough food for each of us. All food was tasty, but my husband is still craving that soup a week later! Overall: The lodge has a beautiful view overlooking the forest. They have their own little trail that goes down to a creek and allows for you to take a mini hike on the property. Although part of it is currently under repair, we still enjoyed part of the trail upon arrival. Wi-fi and charging stations at the main lodge are perfect to allow for you to enjoy a cocktail while you hang out for dinner and it also helps you disconnect when you go to your room. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend to future travelers who are comfortable disconnecting!

Locally owned, budget lodge with a warm family feeling!

Reviewed By jennifergK54JQ

I stayed at Gorilla CloseUp Lodge in March 2022, and Seith and his staff took such great care of me! If you are traveling on a budget yet still want excellent service, amazing food, safety, and feel like you are part of the family, then I highly recommend Gorilla CloseUp Lodge. I have stayed at many luxury lodges in different parts of Africa, and this was my second time returning to Uganda. I had such an incredible experience the first time I visited that I just had to come back again, and see the gorillas, a life changing experience -- and a different experience each time! I just couldn't spend the money on the high end luxury lodges again, and after staying at Gorilla CloseUp Lodge, I was so happy with my choice! The lodge is locally owned so it feels more authentic, versus foreign ownership. Seith did an excellent job and was always open to my suggestions and always wanted to hear from me and make sure I had everything I needed. Seith provided roundtrip transportation from the Kisoro airstrip to the lodge and for each gorilla tracking too. Herbert, the chef, customized each meal and always consulted with me prior to make sure I was happy with his selections. The food was delicious, and so fresh! Right from the farms. Friday, Ruth, and Gerald were always so accommodating making sure I always had everything I needed. Gerald made lovely floral designs in the doorway area and on the bed, welcoming me with flowers he picked locally. He also did laundry for me daily (hand washed) and did an excellent job preparing the room each day (and always washed my hiking boots from daily activities including tracking). Friday provided excellent customer service and was always ready with coffee, tea, and snacks whenever I returned from an activity. I felt like a VIP guest because he was always so attentive and always was checking on me to make sure I had what needed at all times. Ruth was so sweet and kind, and I enjoyed getting to know her as well! Seith has many activities offered, for the days or times you aren't gorilla tracking such as chameleon tracking, hiking to the "Top Of Heaven," seeing the waterfall nearby (I highly recommend this nature walk to the waterfall), picking tea leaves with the local women, and more! The local guide Deus (not sure if I spelled that correctly, sorry) took good care of me and always made himself available for activities even with little notice. I also was fortunate to have live entertainment! Seith arranged for the Silverback Community Group to come to the lodge and perform for me, twice, which was such a joy! This group (run by Rebbeca) combines local women and children and they dance and sing for you; you feel immersed in their culture. I even asked them to teach me a few moves! They don't get to perform for the gorilla tracking tourists, so if they perform for you at the lodge, please tip them as any donation is greatly appreciated and goes a long way! Also, let's talk about showers. I am a shower snob and love to take hot showers, a luxury, yes! They do manually warm up the water, so just give them some notice (20-25 minutes) when you are ready to shower, and the hot water lasted longer here than a neighboring luxury lodge I stayed at last year. That impressed me. Hotter showers than a luxury lodge!! I stayed in the Dian Fossey Cottage and had a gorgeous view of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It was so beautiful that I ended up eating most of my meals on the balcony, which I recommend! Friday will bring everything to you, you don't have to go anywhere. I highly recommend this lodge because the staff works so hard and really wants to make sure you feel taken care of at all times. They make you feel like you are part of their family and really truly appreicate your business. This lodge feels so authentic because it is Ugandan owned (Seith) and run by local Ugandas. As a solo traveller, I engaged in many conversations with the staff and they were just so friendly. It is expensive to travel to Africa from California (USA), so if you are looking to budget a bit, Gorilla CloseUp Lodge is a fantastic option, you will not regret!

Favorite place in Bwindi&Uganda

Reviewed By Kristin_Netherlands

Karungi camp was our absolute favorite place in Uganda! It’s beautifully situated, the rooms are cosy&clean, the staff is really friendly ánd you get the opportunity to interact with the local community while staying there. There’s a wonderful garden where basically all the food that is served, is grown. There’s lots of birds and a great shower. There’s beautiful hikes with panoramic views of the volcanos and various community experiences that can easily be organized during your stay. We’d highly recommend staying there for at least 2 or 3 full days so you get the chance to dive into local Ugandan culture and the lush surroundings of Karungi Camp. Seeing the mountain gorillas was a breathtaking experience, but just being at Karungi Camp was one of the highlights that stood out most to us as well.

Glorious Isolation

Reviewed By holidayguidemagazine

The Crested Crane is one of the most remote lodges that we visited during our trip across Uganda. The best thing about this quaint lodge is the magnificent views it offers across the undulating hills that surround it. With abundant wildlife and crested cranes flying across the landscape, the view from the property is almost picture perfect. The team of Holiday Guide magazine from Dubai visited the Crested Crane for a lunch stopover at the lodge's clean and well-appointed restaurant overlooking the glorious views across the African landscape. This is a a perfect place to stay if you are looking for peace and serenity and want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a few days in the lap of nature in glorious isolation. The service staff are mostly from the villages around the property and are very helpful and co-operative. We extended our lunch stopover to take in the views and enjoy the peace and serenity that envelopes this beautiful lodge built atop a hillock. Highly recommended for nature lovers and those suffering with early symptoms of 'urban insanity'. ;-)

Nice Forest Views !

Reviewed By Andrewschoeman

We spent 2 nights at Gorilla Valley Lodge, such mixed feelings about this place ! The location is Magnificent, beautiful views of the Bwindi Forest and its close to Rushaga where the Gorilla trekking start point is, the lodge has lovely gardens where you can see loads of special birds, but the lodge is really tired and needs a lot of work, the room we got smelt musty and the trapdoor to the roof was missing so at night we got a strong smell of bats coming into the room, the manager moved us to another room the next day, the bathroom is messy with the shower water going all over the bathroom floor and its just a weird setup ! The food was basic but tasty and the staff were Friendly enough.
