My New Family In Namibia

Reviewed By cdavis140053

I came to Namibia under rather stressful pretenses, to acquire a Visa I needed to work on a cruise ship. Everything was hinging on this Visa. On arrival at Chameleon, after two exhausting plane flights, I was immediately put at ease and felt so welcome! The following day was my Visa interview and needless to day, I was relaxed. From the moment I arrived till the moment I left, Chameleon Backpackers felt like home and their staff, became family. Comfortable, beautiful scenery, ideally located to whatever you might require. Whenever I am in Windhoek, there is no other place I'd bother staying...top class!

Average Stay

Reviewed By ninatG9490FV

Overall my stay was okay. The hostel was neat and tidy, but I think there is room for improvements. The staff is all volunteers which means they don't know Namibia very well. It's a clever business model to have a full volunteer staff, but not super helpful to customers who need travel advice about the country. At least 2 locals on staff who would be great to answer questions. I also didn't like that the cleaning staff was all black locals who didn't feel integrated into the hostel. It gave me apartheid vibes, Swakopmund in general gives apartheid vibes. It was like the black cleaning staff was there/present, but not to be heard or seen. The volunteers sign off on the cleaning staffs hours at the end of the day and are told to "make sure the cleaning staff does all of their work." It's like the owner trust the all white European volunteer staff that he just met a few days ago and who will leave within a few weeks more than he trust his fellow Namibians because they are black. Black Namibians are capable of more than just cleaning, maybe consider hiring locals to answer questions about the area. Be sure to read up on the history of German and South African colonization of Namibia before your trip to add some context to the environment. The cancellation policy is also not helpful for backpackers. When you're backpacking you don't always have a plan. I wanted to stay in Namibia for two weeks, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I paid to stay at Salty Jackal for two weeks and only stayed in my room half the time because I ended up traveling the country. I thought the rate for a single room was too high since you don't get a private bathroom. In a single room you still have to share a bathroom with everyone in the hostel. Lastly - all of the pets are super sweet. However, I often saw the cat hanging out on the kitchen counter and dinner table which is gross.

Element Riders Place Backpackers is the affordable accommodation choice for the adventure sports traveler, the backpacker, the visitor and tourist on a budget. We offer self-catering for groups/families, single, double or dorms; all to suit your budget and requirements. We offer 4 rooms with shared bathroom facilities and 3 rooms with en-suite shower and toilet. A fully equipped kitchen and mobile braai/barbeque is available. We have a lounge with book-exchange and one with TV (full DSTV). We provide simple, yet comfortable and cleanly facilities and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Daily housekeeping, free parking and free Wi-Fi is included. Please note the following: Although we try our best to keep everything clean, if the wind blows (as it does a lot in Luderitz) there will be dust, there will be some sand in the windows and all kinds of things blowing through the yards. Our establishment is NOT a hotel but Virgina and Ndapandula will give their best to make you feel home!

Gem on a Budget.....

Reviewed By Rebekka v

We stayed at Element Riders for a week. The Room we had had 3 beds and an en-suite bathroom. Meals - if we didn't braai - were prepared in the kitchen (pots, pans, cutlery and dishes available). Everyday we explored the Coast at Lüderitz and did the sightseeing in town by foot from Element Riders. It is centrally located and has secure parking. As soon as a little problem arose (one shelve was broken in our room) the owner immediately came and fixed the problem. The rooms are currently being upgraded and renovated... Standard is already better than a Backpackers. We will be back - Rainer!!!!!

The safari comes to you

We spent 2 amazing nights at the lodge. Our accommodation was comfortable and quite unique. Our first evening a small pride of lions spent the entire night on the far side of the waterhole. Over the course of our two days and nights we saw giraffes, warthogs, elephant, zebra, wildebeest and during dinner the second night a leopard spent 15 minutes drinking at the waterhole. Also many birds including a European bee eater. Excellent food, including fresh baked bread every day. It was our favorite of all the fantastic lodges we visited.

Stayed three nights at Amanpuri, very quiet when the big overland buses wasn't there, more buzzing when they arrived. Clean rooms with a lot of storage space for your stuff (stayed in a single room). Very helpful staff, they really go a long way in helping organizing tours and they were able to arrange a private tour for me even though that tour didn't go that day.

Ten Days Stay

Reviewed By Michael D

My girlfriend and I stayed here for ten days and really enjoyed it. The backpackers is located on the edge of town but its only a fifteen minute walk to the main shopping centre. Its nice and peaceful away from the main traffic and the staff were very nice. The gate is always locked but you get a key so you can come and go as you please. There is a kitchen with all the bits and bobs you will need and the showers were pretty good too. We camped with our rooftop tent with no issues (its not really designed for camping) near the rooms and there is another spot you can use too. The internet works well in the communal area. Very nice and affordable place to stay and unwind after visiting Etosha.
