Tomaz Godec Museum

The museum bears the name of its former owner, Tomaz Godec, a skilled tanner, excellent sportsman, mountaineer and tourist worker in the Bohinj area. He was one of the initiators of the so-called Bohinj Rebellion of 1941 and was shot as a hostage in Mauthausen. There you can visit a permanent exhibition about Bohinj in first and second world war, and also the Tannery museum. In following years we

Oplen House Museum

Oplen House was opened to the public only in 1991. The shingle covered house is a typical Bohinj homestead, where all the rooms still contain the original equipment and furniture, representing an interesting portrayal of the way of life in Bohinj in the beginning of the 20th century. Oplen House is a typical farmhouse which was built as a longhouse with living and farm rooms in the same structure, featuring an authentic black kitchen (one of the few houses where fire can still be lit in the fireplace in this chimney-less kitchen), hiša (today’s living room) with bogkov kot (a corner with a cross), kamra (chamber), ispa (attic), a barn, and various original farm tools and equipment.

National Museum of Contemporary History (Muzej Novejse Zgodovine Slovenije)

The Museum explores the history of Slovenia from 1914 up to nowadays. In addition to its exhibitions, the Museum also offers a variety of programmes for both children and adults. It carries out activities in the field of culture, education and research, collaborating with various institutions, and thus serves as a bridge between the general public and historical science. It connects the fates of 20th century Slovenian people and provides visitors with answers to questions about their own identity in modern times. The Museum also serves as a gathering place for groups of all kinds and as a place for dialogue and reflection. It not only answers questions, but it also raises questions and assists visitors in their search for answers, forming a type of partnership in which the Museum serves as a dynamic, innovative and welcoming establishment.

This is a great museum, located in Tivoli Park, following the modern history of Slovenia during the 20th century. Well laid out chronologically and with translations into English, it offers a range of exhibits, including some fascinating films. Downstairs was a photographic exhibition of the work of Edi Šelhaus which we especially enjoyed. At €8 for the family to go in, this was great value for money and for us. the most interesting and enjoyable museum in Ljubljana.

Skofja Loka Museum

The Museum takes up all of the castle inside and the field out back. Not “the highest university level” for the collection but that does not negate the excellence of the material and presentation and understanding of the historical significance. The two women at the ticket desk inside are fluent in several languages and know their history and offer additional information. I am always amazed at how engaging and energetic and informative Slovenian people in the museums, shops, stores, and cafes are to be of service and share their town and country.

Nice museum inside ljubljana's castle. We got the all inclusive ticket to the castle which offers admission to the puppetry museum and we were surprised to find out that it was one of the most interesting things we saw in Ljubljana. Very nice museum with snart interactive features to play.

Elan Alpine Ski Museum

Elan factory was founded in 1945 on the initiative of the recognized ski jumper and manufacturer of skis, Mr. Rudi Finžgar. Elan has since provided numerous important products to the market which have changed the history of alpine skiing with their technology, form and technical characteristics. We are proud to be the first ski museum among ski producers.

Highly recommend this stop for skiers interested in learning about how one very innovative ski company has influenced the history of ski technology. Note that the museum and the tours are not open every day of the week so plan accordingly, we learned this when we arrived on a Monday when both the museum and factory tours were closed. Disappointment gave way to delight when one very knowledgeable staff member offered us a private tour on his lunch hour - but I would not bet my visit on that!

National Museum of Slovenia

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institutions in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vace.

As visiting museums is part of my job (as a museum auditor) I perhaps look at other things than normal visitors even when I'm on holiday as now. I first visited the permanent exhibition and it is 4 out of 5. I've read other stats saying it was too little on display. That surprises me as the collection is well displayed sometimes actually too much objects in the vitrines. Less is sometimes better for the story than 1000 of the same... It is well written with information/maps in both Slovenian and English, also films have English subtitles. Displays and rooms are light and clean. Routing / time line is easy to follow. The Roman Lapidarium is an excellent study collection. Only I can understand families complains as it is too little hands-on /interactive things for children. It is perhaps too focused on adults/students. But if I gave the permanent display 4 I would give the temporary exhibition Archeomuzika 6! What a joy to experience - with a childish smile beating the sounding rocks with antler clubs (yeah this is ROCK & roll) to hear different sounds ringing out and realise that music instruments all over Europe (and world) have much common. Chapeau to the makers of this traveling exhibition which is the result of the The European Music Archaeology Project. I truly think of coming back or revisit it at another venue. ARHEOMUZIKA- the sounds and music of ancient Europe is on display in Ljubljana until 24th of September 2017.

Skofja Loka Castle & Museum

The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in the Škofja Loka Castle, whose imposing exterior dominates the town below. The rich museum collections bear witness to the past and the present day of the territory along the Selška and Poljanska Sora rivers, which formed the Škofja Loka Dominion ruled by the Bishops of Freising, Bavaria, back in the day (973-1803). The Museum's archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sports collections, as well as an open-air museum present the cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area and also place it in the wider Slovenian and European contexts.

Charming little town, nice for families and for single or couple travellers as well. There is cute little playground with view of castle and square where you can have a nice cup of coffe... Or you can get lost in history while wondering through town with long art and craft tradition, so you can get a good deal for local products as well :-) From the castle on the hill (5 min walk) there is a stunning view, if you have time visit the museum as well. It is a great peek into medieval times and past glory. Round the castle there are many paths in beautiful nature and views worth seeing. If you have time and own transportation head to Poljanska valley and Selska valley.
