Top 10 Historical & Heritage Tours in Cairo, Cairo Governorate

September 30, 2021 Rebbecca Marino

Cairo’s an ancient city that also happens to be a modern metropolis—it’s one of the biggest cities in the Middle East and has the traffic and noise issues to prove it. But as long as you’re not looking for solitude, Cairo—the City of the Thousand Minarets—is a splendid place to explore Egyptian history and culture. (Editor's note: Our list was compiled before political unrest prompted many countries to issue travel warnings for Egypt. If you're currently planning a trip to Egypt, please consider the risks and monitor your government's travel alerts.)

Amr was our guide when we visited Luxor. He is hands down the most knowledgable, enthusiastic and passionate guide we had the privilege of meeting on our entire trip! He never rushed us, was obviously so happy to discuss and share his knowledge the entire day, and was so open to sharing his love and respect of his incredible country. His suggestion to first visit Karnak temple was amazing; we had it all to ourselves!

With Amr, we saw the West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshupset Temple and the Temple of Deir El Bahari), as well as the East Bank (Karnak and Luxor Temples). We must have asked him hundreds of questions, but he always had an interesting fact to share, accompanied by a smile! We would 100% recommend Amr, and are so grateful to have had him show us around his home! Please, when you do this tour ASK FOR AMR! :) You will not be disappointed! His direct number is +20 100 339 0255. Honestly, contact him if you would like the most in depth, historically accurate and INCREDIBLE experience ever! Thank you Amr!

I’ve been to Egypt three times, I met one of the owners (Sem Sem) of The Egypt Tour Specialists when I traveled several years ago with him on a group tour for a big international company for which he served as both a manager and a guide. When I reached out to him for help planning my last trip, I discovered that Sem Sem had started his own company. I knew I wanted to hire him and no one else, but he insisted I get quotes from other companies before booking with The Egypt Tour Specialists. This was a first for any travel company! We worked out an itinerary, and Sem Sem handled everything from there. I included the temple of Abydos which Sem Sem assured me he would do his best to arrange, but could not guarantee as Egypt has a rather complicated permit system for anyone going off the beaten path. We did not know if we would be able to do Abydos until literally the evening before as the government has the right to yank the permit for any reason at any time. As this was during Covid and I was a solo traveler, my permit received extra scrutiny. We made it! It was only after that Sem Sem told me about the offices he had to visit, the fees paid, and the numerous phone calls made over weeks to make this happen. Any other company would have just said it is too complicated, expensive, and logistically difficult. The Egypt Tour Specialists knew it was important to me and made it happen even though it would have been more profitable and easier to just have insisted on doing something else. This was the best of all three trips I have taken. Just some of my unforgettable memories are entering the step period at Saqqara (It had been closed for a number of years and had just reopened shortly before I arrived), experiencing the vibrant Copt community (Egyptian Christian minority) in the Christian quarter of Cairo, having a beer and just discussing life with Sem Sem in a swanky bar/restaurant with amazing views of Cairo, the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple at night, my adventure going to Abydos, and meeting Sem Sem’s family when I wrapped up the trip on the Red Sea. It’s not just the memories that stick with me though. It is the Egyptian people. Recent history has not been kind to them, but everywhere I went I received a smile and a warm welcome. Despite the news we sometimes read in the USA, Egypt feels just as safe to me as Europe or America, it is only marginally farther for Americans than Europe with a much longer history, amazingly preserved monuments, and it is very reasonably priced. If you smile, trust a little, and extend an open hand in friendship, you will be treated extremely well regardless of your nationality or international politics. I would have never had this experience if I had booked a fancy Nile cruise or a place on a large tour bus. The Egypt Tour Specialists is a reputable local company that operates with integrity where your money will go back to the local economy rather than to a huge international tour company. They are able to tailor a tour to any age, group size, length, and price point. Why just observe Egypt when you can be a part of it? By using The Egypt Tour Specialists, I not only saw the monuments and got the history, but I left with friends and the place in my heart for Egypt grew even bigger than it already was.

I booked a private tour to the pyramids to avoid all the hassle, and it was definitely worth it. The tour was prepaid by credit card and I found the price affordable. All my emails were promptly answered, too. I was picked up right on time by a driver and my guide, Nesma, and as traffic was light, the journey from central Cairo to the pyramids took some 20 minutes only. Nesma gave quick briefs at our stops and I had ample time to look around and take photos. She answered all the questions I had and did her best to accommodate my wishes. Her English was excellent. After the pyramids and the sphinx, we made a quick extra stop at a papyrus shop/factory, where they explained the making and history of papyrus. There was no pressure to buy anything, it was a genuine educational stop and an interesting one at that. I can warmly recommend Emotours. I found them reliable, punctual and knowledgeable.

I had a wonderful experience with Delixe Travel and specifically our Egyptologist Ahmed Zaki. Deluxe travel was efficient, friendly and courteous with airport transfers and getting us to our hotel. They also offered to assist with COVID testing. We felt safe and secure at all times with their team. Touring with Ahmed Zaki was very special. He is knowledge and passionate about the history and eager to answer questions and point out small details that would otherwise go unnoticed. He was very communicative and helped us tailor the tour based on our interest. Just a great overall experience.

I very rarely book tours, but knowing that Cairo is a special kind of beast due to the high number of scammers after money, I decided to save myself the headache and book a tour for my Cairo layover. Memo and and the driver Mohammad arrived at the airport on time (probably early) and brought me to a well air conditioned car. Memo has a great amount of knowledge about the sights and gives great advice for travelers. He is enthusiastic and took some great photos of me on my camera (I'm not up for posting photos of myself on TripAdvisor, but he knows exactly the angles to get some great photos). My only piece of advice is that unless you actually think you'll buy something, the aromatherapy store is skippable -- while the papyrus store gives you some knowledge even if you don't plan on making a purchase, the aromatherapy place is largely a sales pitch, albeit one from a very nice woman. The restaurant was nice and since we had a little extra time, Memo helped me obtain a sim card for my phone. Highly recommended and affordable.
