Colne Valley Museum

Colne Valley Museum aims to show visitors the way of life of the people of the old West Riding of Yorkshire who made worsted and woollen cloth in their homes in the 19th century. You can see what their houses were like and how the looms and other machinery were set out to make sure that the families could make a living. Our terrace of four cottages was built by the Pearson family and we tell their story too. The Museum will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020 and during this time it has been run entirely by volunteers. They are ready to demonstrate the skills of spinning wool, weaving cloth and clog making to visitors. We have a programme of temporary exhibitions and special weekends when we demonstrate household tasks and cooking - especially bread making and baking of traditional havercakes, the oat cakes that took the place of bread in many homes of the time. Our website has much more information and we invite you to come and see us soon. The kettle will be on!

This museum is a wealth of information on the cloth trade in this area of Yorkshire and if that is not enough for you, how about a practical demonstration of clog making and if that is not enough, how about a lovely cup of tea or coffee and some cakes. This place has got it all. The staff are dressed in period costume, warm and friendly and very willing to share all their knowledge on carding, spinning and weaving of cloth with practical demonstrations to boot. Enjoy walking around the Victorian scullery and bedroom. Make sure you allow at least three hours to fully appreciate all that is on show. From time to time special craft and attraction days take place so check on the website to make the most of your planned visit. The museum is open Saturday and Sunday and Bank Holidays. Parking is slightly problematical and be prepared to park on the public roadway opposite the church. I really enjoyed my day and would recommend a visit without hesitation.

I have been a client at VJW for many years and am so excited to have my first post lockdown appointment booked in. I go fortnightly for gel nails as well as for occasional other treats such as the odd massage or spa day (highly recommended for an indulgent day with a loved one). As well as my nails being very much in need of some TLC I am looking forward to feeling relaxed and pampered there as I always do. The treatments are always luxurious and professional and delivered in such a lovely, relaxing environment. My nails have always been weak and have improved immensely since my regular visits to VJW. All the therapists are professional and friendly making every visit a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thanks all, have missed you and can’t wait to see you soon.

Fabulous village inn! Well organised; every care taken in the present circumstances. Careful welcome at the entrance with hand sanitizer at every turn! Delicious home made pie with plenty of choice, plus mushy peas; sauces too ... including mint sauce of course! Very welcoming open fire, especially as we had arrived on our bikes on a chilly day! Great pint of Landlord for my man, delicious dry rosé for me. A great atmosphere, a lovely welcome too! Thanks!

My partner bought me a pamper package many years ago to this beautiful hidden gem of a spa and I've been a regular ever since gaining VIP status which includes lots of extra treats. I try to make a day of it or at least half a day with treatments in the morning a lovely sandwich lunch and more pampering in the afternoon. The thermal rooms are heavenly and every treatment I have had has been wonderfully relaxing and done extremely professionally by very friendly and knowledgeable therapists. One of the reasons this spa stand out is the personal one to one service and the fact they only allow a limited number of clients at any one time so you are always made to feel extra special. I am also now a convert to the amazing Eve Taylor range, especially the No 6 serum. Unfortunately due to covid-19 the spa is currently closed, so really missing my pamper sessions, can't wait for the spa to reopen and have a well-earned day in the spa, but for now I'm enjoying the weekly distant Reiki sessions on a Sunday between 11.00-11.30am, what a fab idea. I would highly recommend this spa to anyone and everyone, have a look at their website for details of the many treatments, packages and also pictures of the spa, and give yourself an indulgent treat or two, you won't be disappointed. Thank you Maxine and your lovely team for all your 'perfect pampering'.

Love the Sair! Friendly staff and chatty locals. It’s a proper old Yorkshire Brew pub with hops over the bar, a great jukebox, real fires in winter and dogs laid out on the worn floorboards. The beer’s good and they’re making a real effort to put on good standard live acoustic music on Friday nights. Worth a bus trip or taxi ride out!

Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre

A unique spot in the heart of the Pennine countryside, Standedge Tunnel is the longest canal tunnel in Britain and makes a perfect family day out. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways visitors can explore deep into the tunnel on one of the family friendly guided boat trips, stop for a bite to eat in the cafe and let the kids jump, climb and explore around our playground and wildlife garden.

Reviewed By scsmh4 - Bristol, United Kingdom

As a Yorkshire girl I hate to confess that, until last week, I had never heard of Standedge Tunnel. We had an interesting time in the visitor centre at the Marsden end learning more about the genius, Thomas Telford. After a short ride by boat into the tunnel we took the car over to the western end of the tunnel where we had a lovely walk along the canal, past many locks, to look at the other entrance.

My friend and I visited here on a Friday evening for a catch up. It’s tucked away int the building opposite Huddersfield Police Station and I didn’t even know it was there prior to going. It’s a nice, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of comfy sofa style lounge beds to sit/lay on and relax. There’s your standard tables and booths also. We had a pizza each and they were amazing! Really crispy and delicious. It’s very studenty, however there were a variety of people of different ages in there relaxing. Price wise it’s not the cheapest admittedly, but you’re paying for the chill atmosphere and comfy seating which is absolutely spot on. Will 100% be returning in the future.
