Top 10 Food & Drink in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape

June 24, 2021 Matilde Konrad

The caves of Plettenberg Bay are wrinkles in time, lined with ancient artifacts that date to the Middle Stone Age. Under the sun, Robberg, Central and Lookout beaches are pristine stretches of white sand, magnets for tourists, seagulls and dolphins, who bob playfully just off shore. Wildlife lovers will delight at the Birds of Eden aviary and Monkeyland. (How can you not have fun in a place called Monkeyland?)

The host is such a friendly man , great to chat with while tasting a great amount of wine for your money while overlooking the vineyards. A tour of the cellar is also great to understand the process of the champagne making.

Newstead Wines Restaurant

The same care bestowed on the vineyards is given to Newstead’s culinary offering. Lunches served on the veranda feature seasonal produce, most of it grown on the farm. Today, a salad of fennel, radish and figs, shaved Parma ham and Parmesan, topped with a dressing made with honey produced in the next-door lavender field, is star of the show. Tomorrow it may be shoulder of pork slow-roasted with chilly and ginger and served with spring onion pancakes or slow roasted wood fired spicy chicken. Home-grown macadamias and apples from the Newstead orchard are used in an assortment of bakes and the vegetable garden’s fragrant tomatoes shine on artisanal wood fired pizzas. Delicious desserts. Limited quantities of artisan food is prepared daily. Enjoy winning wines & bubbles & infused craft cocktails in the vineyard Bubble&gin bar.

Everything about this estate was absolutely perfect beginning to end. Staff were friendly and welcoming, food fresh and divine. We ordered the salmon pate to start, stunning thin crusted, light pizzas with fresh rocket and scones & chocolate cake for dessert. Wine tasting beautifully presented. Very stylish venue, super cute resident pooch. My pics don’t do this meal any justice!

Get there before 8am on a Saturday to walk/run 5km through the scenic neighbouring farms where you will see ostriches and some happy cows. Then head to the market for breakfast or a snack. Lovely breads, macaroons, pancakes, fresh produce, gorgeous flowers, sand art station for the kids, 2nd hand books, dream catchers, arts and crafts. Music playing and lots of benches. Very popular over December but can accommodate big numbers.

Good news from Lodestone is that our tasting facility is now officially open and ready to welcome visitors to taste our range of wines and our acclaimed olive oil. We have built a modern yet casual tasting room incorporating a contemporary kitchen from which we shall serve a range of summer meals, light and fresh, using whatever is locally available whenever we can. The tasting room overlooks our dam and vineyards with views through to the Tsitsikama Mountains. It is a lovely place to taste and enjoy wine. The tasting room at Lodestone forms part of The Crags Wine & Bubbly Route which comprises 5 estates in all, in close proximity to one another, which can each provide a memorable tasting experience to visitors. The tasting room will open from 11h00 until 16h00 Wednesday to Sunday. We shall always keep tables open for walk-in visitors which shall be allocated on a first come first served basis. Reservations are recommended during peak season. Please come and see us.

We had a delicious lunch at Lodestone. The highlight was the seared tuna, we had it last December and this time came back specifically for it and it was even better. That coupled with lovely cheese board and sparking wine made for a wonderful afternoon away from the bustle of Plett.
