We spent an afternoon with an English guide from the Kumamoto SGG Club—-Mieko Okada who was our personal guide at the Kumamoto Castle & to the Suizenji Jojuen Gardens. If you go to Kumamoto these two sights should be at the top of your list of things to see & places to go. Hopefully in the next few months more of the reconstruction will allow for an actual tour of the castle, but the grounds, walls, and views were amazing none the less.

This nicely restored castle has a good mix of history and fun. Walkable from the Kokura train station. Kids, including those 65+ will enjoy riding the palanquin and sitting in on a samurai war council. The views are great from the top floor too. A lift is available for the mobility impaired or travel-weary.

We really enjoyed touring the castle grounds. Parking is available and free. You walk in a ways and buy tickets before going up to the tower which houses the museum. The museum houses a great collection of samurai armor, Japanese scrolls, Dutch drawings, and models of the city. They even have play armor for kids to wear for photo opportunities. The views from the top are beautiful. You can see down into the harbor and into the surrounding mountains. This is a must in Hirado.

It is one of the historical sites that symbolize Shimabara. The castle tower is a reconstruction, but it is majestic, and you can see the splendor of the castle from every angle of the moat that surrounds it. The inside of the castle tower is used as a historical museum, and unlike other castles in Japan, it displays many historical documents of Christians who were active in hiding. It is also one of the facilities where you can learn about the beliefs of the Christians around Shimabara and their battles against the forces that tried to suppress them. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Ariake Sea and Mt.Fugen. There is also a show by volunteers dressed up as Samurai warriors, which is fun for children.
