Stopped here on our back down the Cabot Trail for breakfast and were so glad we did. So many interesting and delicious looking options made a decision quite difficult. We decided to go outside the box and ordered breakfast sandwiches with some rather interesting twists. Smoked salmon, egg, cheddar and greens on a muffin and crab, avocado, egg and greens on muffin, turned out to be two of the best things we ever tasted! Be adventurous and try them, you won't be disappointed.

Shining Waters Bakery

This looks like a local favourite which has had a rcent makeover, the owner was young and friendly and the interior laidback but contemporary. We stopped for a coffee on the way through the town and were surprised by the atmosphere and quality food.

Rita's Tea Room & Gift Shop

Rita's Tea Room was on our "bucket list" of places to visit while in Cape Breton as we admit to being minor fans of Rita's music. Our objective at our late lunchtime visit (in mid-week when it was quiet) was afternoon tea for two, which we thoroughly enjoyed. This place proved to be quite astonishing. While the food was fine, it is the whole ambience that is the reason for coming. Charlotte, our friendly and knowledgeable server, made us feel "at home" in this homely setting in which, while displays of Rita's life and career abound and to one side is a gift shop, it is a beautifully maintained and comfortable tea room that in its entirety acts as a tribute to the performer. We were here for more than two hours. Give yourself time to enjoy all that it offers.

Well we had a bit of everything, the ladies were superb, nice country atmosphere and actually was there twice on my trip, told the lady , cant remember her name, told her what a nice place they have created for not only the tourists but for families. Thank you, will be back next year, or next time in Cape Breton.

His soups cannot be beaten: today's offering was a simple mix of multiple mushrooms in a simple broth with perfectly done carramilized onion and topped with fresh scallion. It was served piping hot and was delicious. My spouse had the lobster chowder without the dairy additive which we both thought was one of the best we have ever had; it had big chunks of claw & knuckle. His freshly baked bread comes with the soup and is really fresh and flavorful. I so appreciate the fact that his soups are not loaded with salt, agreeing with him that "you can always add salt". The spouse had her bread as a turkey sandwich, saying it didn't matter what was on that bread, it would be a good sandwich. I had only tasted his pannekoeken previously but I wanted one of my own so I had the farmer's version which had ham, peppers, mushroom, and onion which was topped with cheddar & mozzarella cheese. I now know why everyone writes about how good these are.
