Rutland Water Nature Reserve (Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre)

We had a warm, helpful and informative welcome at the Lynton visitor centre - well organised re COVID precautions - and saw 3 osprey before tea time on our first day at Rutland Water. At the end of the visit we noticed the mini season ticket, for 4 visits to the reserves over 10 days, and the volunteer helpfully let us top up to this from our day ticket. That let us have a return visit to Lynton & two x half days at the other reserve. Lovely settings, very peaceful, and we still didn't get round to all of the hides. One highlight was a heron, fairly close, demonstrating how to line up and swallow a trout.

The Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre

Collection of birds of prey located in 42 acres ancient woodland

Reviewed By P7889CProbertb - Ely, United Kingdom

Despite a wet day this was one of the most enjoyable few hours I spent in a while. My wife and I opted to pay extra for the woodland walk with one of the birds - my wife took an Eagle Owl and I took a Harris Hawk (although we had to walk a few metres apart - the birds don't get on). Our humorous and engaging guide, Tom, gloved us up, showed us how to befriend, handle and stroke our birds, and guided us on our woodland walk, all the while providing interesting information on the birds and the centre, as well as answering and questions. Hour long walk (with a break for a sit down) over, we then had the opportunity to have these birds fly to us to take food from our hands. It was lovely to be so close to these majestic birds. We then rounded off our visit by walking around the various enclosures viewing the birds the centre looks after. It has to be said the focus of the centre is on looking after the birds rather than flashy visitor facilities - somewhere to wash your hands and a portaloo in the car park were all you can expect, but if you fancy refreshments I can recommend the tearoom at Barnsdale Gardens, 5 mins drive away. The centre has done all that can reasonably be expected to be COVID-secure, and for an interesting and diverting few hours you could do worse that pay the centre a visit.

Normanton Church

Reviewed By 872lornagv - North Luffenham, United Kingdom

We chose this for my husband's funeral and to the best of my knowledge we were the first people to ever hold a funeral here. It's a wonderful location for it and I would recommend it unhesitatingly. We had a humanist service and the space was perfect, not too overwhelming and not too small, perfect. Parking is no problem, and it makes what could be a dreary experience into something memorable for the right reasons
