Vino Zorz

The growing and production of wine have been present in the Žorž family from Slap since 1696 and they are a reminder of their tradition, nowadays supported by the modern touch in the art of wine making. With a production of wine extending on an area of nearly 30 acres, the Žorž farm is one of the largest familly owned winery in the Vipava Valley. Žorž vineyards are sowed with red grapes varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera, as well as white grape varieties Pinot Gris, Sauvignon, Muscat Blanc, Malvasia, Riesling, as well as local varieties Zelen and Pinela. The Žorž family uses modern equipment with which they produce an astonishing variety of top-notch wines. The key to their exquisite wines and excellent success lies in the accomplished vision and common work of the Žorž generations. In recent years, the wine making part has been already passed to the youngest generation who seeks new opportunities in the combination of their professional knowledge and the experience of their fathers. In the year of 2015, cellar Žorž became also biological, which proves that we are following the newest and the best trends in wine producing. The Žorž farm and wine cellar offers you bottled wines which will convince you with the nobleness of flavor, aroma and color. Taste them on various occasions alongside a gourmet dish and enjoy the wine in a completely new way. In the atrium of wine cellar Žorž you can make a wish in the oldest farm fountain in Slovenia and start an unforgetable journey throught our wine cellar. The doors to the Žorž farm and wine cellar are always open for you!

Aside from a great winetasting (ditto everything other reviewers have said), we also stayed in their newly designed rooms for 2 nights. Anja Zorz welcomed us to their family run winery and with great pride, explained more about Slap and the Vipava Valley. In addition to sampling Zorz wines, she gave us great recommendations for other wineries to visit (and called to organize), as well as fabulous dinner recommendations. Her husband/winemaker Jerne and brother-in-law Andre added to our very personalized and enthusiastic interactions throughout our stay. The rooms were surprisingly modern and we were very happy to have bar soap, body lotion and shampoo (not always provided in Slovenia/Croatia). Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. My favorite place so far in our trip, I loved the interaction with and the passion of the locals!!

As you can see, ALL the reviews are amazing and it is.... Urban, the owner and host is an amazing and very kind person. We were there earlier and he took the time to sit down and chat with us and, I learned more in half an hour on Slovenia than with all our travel books. This is a family business for 8 generations. Their wine is different and amazing. This is a great activity and could not recommend enough.

Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is situated in the middle of a towering cliff, a mere 9 km from Postojna Cave. Picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable, it has been dominating the surrounding area, perched high up in the 123-metre high cliff, for more than 800 years. It is listed among the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the world. Check the timetable of visits by months.

Predjama Castle. When travelling Rovinj, Croatia to Ljubljana, we debated whether or not to make the side trip to this castle since we had already seen two other major structures built into cliffs (Tekija Blagaj Dervish House, Mostar and Pustinja Blaca/Blaca Hermitage, Brac) on this trip, but we are glad we did. Our GPS lady friend got us there with just one little glitch, which we overcame having learned to follow local road signs any time there is a discrepancy with the GPS. The drive there was through little villages and it took us about an hour to reach the castle from the Croatia-Slovenia border. There is a small parking lot which is only 50 m from the path to the cave. No fee is required unless you decide to go inside. The Predjama Castle is a picturesque and impregnable castle perched in the middle of a 404’ high rocky cliff where it has rested for over 800 years. We have learned that settling in the caves initially provided people such as monks and kings protection from pirates and the rest of the structures are the product of home improvements made over the centuries. At the base of the cliff flows the Lokva River, which disappears underground deep below the castle, which has had a variety of owners over the centuries. At the end of WWII the castle was “confiscated and nationalized by the Yugoslav Communist authorities and turned into a museum” which did not work out well. Since 2007 it has been managed by an independent company. We did not pay to go in because from what we read, the insides are not authentic, but contain lots of suits of armor and warfare gear. We did spend about 45 minutes walking the grounds, taking pictures and using the clean restroom. Food is also for sale. All in all, this is a worthy stop that we are glad we made. As an aside, about 10 minutes away were the caves. We drove past on our way back to the highway and were amazed at the size of the parking lot there, as well as the number of cars. It looked like Disney World. I am sure it must be a wonderful adventure for some, but at 70, I try to avoid large crowds where I am shuttled about like cattle.

Park vojaske zgodovine Pivka

The Park of Military History Pivka is a museum and experience center providing its visitors with a unique insight into the rich military and historical heritage of this strategically very important part of Slovenia. The Park hosts one of the biggest tank-artillery collection in this part of Europe. Aside from the tanks, field guns and other armored vehicles from the second half of the 20th century, we also put on display a collection of the military aircrafts together with the helicopter Gazelle T0-001 Velenje, which supplement the museum contents. Nevertheless, the most attractive exhibit piece for our visitors is still the sabotage submarine P-913 Zeta, since they can also see its interior and experience the secret world of the submariners. With its exhibition The Road to Independence, the Park of Military History was also the first to chronologically and systematicly display the process of gaining independence in the Republic of Slovenia and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. This topic is also illustrated with the display of armored and other vehicles that participated in the Slovenian war for independence in 1991.

We visited this castle while in Slovenia to visit family and friends. A friend lives in Cerknica and we came here as part of our journey for the day. We absolutely loved it and the surrounding forest. It was explained by our friend that this castle is entirely original with the furnishings. Our tour guide was tremendously helpful with her explanations; and we loved touring each room. This castle is different from the typical castles you see throughout Europe; and we loved its authenticity. We would highly recommend.
