Worst "B and B" stay ever

Reviewed By 489kirstyl

This was planned to be a special first weekend away in the 2 years post COVID-19. We especially booked a B and B looking for a personal touch and something relatively safe COVID-19 wise. We were greeted to find out that the blind were not working in our room properly. This would have been entirely fine, and was acceptedas such (I appreciate fortrightness). The receptionist/handyperson/cook proceeded to berate another individual for parking in a spot in front of the garage. In retrospect we should have known then that things were off to a poor start observing that interaction. However, everyone has their better moments, so we met this slide. We went down 15 stairs to our room after having been told that everything was on one level. Our TV did not work. To his credit, the employee came and got another remote. There were limited channels. The room was sparse. Relatively clean but no particular comforts (pen to write with, no writing paper, no decor other than dark brown walls in bathroom and a turtle lamp that had orongs bent out of shape.) The room was cool. We thought the temp had been turned down (66 degrees) because no-one was in the room. We raised the temperature and left to enjoy our supper and our planned outdoor activity. Upon our return, we were notified the boiler was not working and that there could be issues with the hot water (apparently hot water heating. The linkage between heating and the running hot water were not evident.) The room was freezing. We had needed to remove our footwear at the building entrance and had cold feet in spite of ski socks on the basement floor. We got into bed but were frozen. I needed to attire myself appropriately and go up and ask about the heating. The employee came down. My mother, who is in her mid seventies, was berated for having raised the heating. She couldn't get warm. The employee adjusted the fan. We continued to freeze to the point my teeth were chattering. The walls and floor were cold. We had a horrible sleep and actually ended up sleeping in the same bed to stay warm. In the morning I overheard the employee stating that there are known problems with the windows throughout as others were complaining. The breakfast was awful. The egg pan was reused so the eggs were burned. The homefries were dried out and the bacon was inedible. The breakfast set-up is detailed in attached photos, as is the egg pan which was keft sitting on the gas stove while the employee was upstairs. We had to get our own cheap jam out of a cupboard. All of the food laid out is illustrated so the reader can assess for themselves if they feel this is appropriate. We lugged our luggage up the stairs and spoke to the employee to let him know our dissatisfaction. He actually yelled st my mother and banged on the counter and threatened to call their lawyers when my mother suggested that we should have some recompense for the poor experience. I have worked in a variety of environments and never witnessed such rudeness. I was actually fearful of him escalating so started to video the interaction. He calmed down oh so quickly and then begrudgingly printed out a receipt when asked. The night's stay cost around $225. I am sure we could have had a better experience at any low end motel in the area. I am particularly upset as this night away was a long awaited gift to me from my mom and she meant for it to be something special. The other travellers we encountered were similarly dissatisfied with their stay. I am hopeful that this is helpful to someone out there as we all need a break in these times. On a positive note we had excellent service at the local Canadian Tire, enjoyed the Eclipse light show and appreciated the wonderful service at Family Restaurant.

Wonderful Stay

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at Echo Woods. The house is beautiful and the room was large and comfortable. The breakfast was amazing, absolutely stunning gourmet breakfast that fills you up so you really don’t need much of a lunch. Yes breakfast is a 9Am however the host did accommodate us the one morning for and 8:30 one so we can hit the slopes at Hidden Valley. The place is clean and a few minutes out of town on a picturesque drive. I would highly recommended.

Stay away from this place

Reviewed By Marina K

The room was a good size but very outdated, bare bones, furniture very old and dirty. The towels were not clean. The blankets were thin with rips in them. Coffee machine had a bit of water and rest was mold in the water compartment like no one was cleaning this machine for good two weeks. We have booked for two nights, left after one night. The only positive was the fact that it was close to Arrowhead Provincial Park but you have to drive to the park anyway.

Top Notch B&B - Better than the Rest

Reviewed By sheucher

We had been looking for a top notch bed and breakfast in Ontario and all of them so far seemed much less than perfect. Until we found Morgan House. Pam and Jamie are wonderful hosts - kind, thoughtful and helpful. The room is very clean and comfortable with decent mattress and pillows, and a large bathroom with a bath. The breakfasts are delicious and the location excellent for trips to Algonquin and Limberlost. This is a very special place indeed - similar to the best we’ve found in Europe - and we highly recommend a stay here. We will be back for sure.

Really yummy breakfast and beautiful location. Unfortunately we will not be returning and cannot recommend this B&B to others. The host has a hot tub, kayaks, and a fire pit, however she doesn’t seem keen on her guests using these amenities. She asked us to notify her before using any of these amenities and there were so many conditions surrounding each. When I mentioned this to the host, she responded “This is not a resort, its my backyard. I live here.” All in all, she just made us feel like an imposition and very uncomfortable. She also talked to us during our breakfasts. My husband and I really just wanted to visit with each other. We stayed in a garden shed in the back yard which is really only big enough for one guest. It has a compostable toilet, which we were not allowed to put any TP in. Also the toilet really attracted fruit flies. Our experience here has really turned us off of B&Bs. We will be renting AirBnBs or hotels from here on out. I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but I feel people should know the truth. It’s not a welcoming environment. Also, every bad review this host receives, she claims she doesn’t know the person who posted it or that she’s been hacked. If she responds in this manner, I will post a photo of my receipt.

A Hidden Gem

We found this hotel quite accidentally after deciding we wanted to get away for several days. Our room with a balcony, overlooked Lake Joseph. It had a fully equipped kitchen and newly renovated bathroom. I have to commend Peter, the owner, who bent over backwards to attend to any issues. His attention to detail and enthusiasm to help made our stay very enjoyable. We had problems with our TV. Peter sent in Edwin, the general manager, to fix it. Edwin was also on hand to help me at the dock with tying and untying the paddle boat. The waterfront is stocked with paddle-boats, kayaks and paddle boards. There is a large inflatable climber and slide that I’m sure families with kids would enjoy. This is a wonderful spot for a vacation. We will return.?

My wife and I had a wonderful 4 day stay at Lakewoods Cottage Resort while we day hiked in Algonquin Park. We found the cottage to be very well maintained and the owners extremely friendly. The cottage was perfect for our needs as we hiked all day then were able to wash up, sleep and have breakfast before heading to Algonquin again. Lakewoods is located just a 15 minute drive from the West gate. The cottage was supplied with bath towels, face cloths, hand soap, tea towels, all kitchen cutlery and utensils, pots & pans, dish soap, a Keurig, toaster, a full range, microwave and fridge. Outside was a deck, BBQ, and an incredible view of Oxtongue Lake. There is a beach and a children's play area as well. I highly recommend Lakewoods Cottage Resort and if you go, I hope you enjoy yourself as much as my wife and I did.
