An oasis in beachside Dili

Reviewed By jamesnorman

For a first time visitor to Timor Leste, I can't recommend Beachside highly enough. From the moment I arrived in Dili I was looked after - picked up from the airport, greeted with a beautiful breakfast (that was on par with anything in Melbourne), given keys to my beautiful apartment room with kitchen and day bed on the verandah, given complete privacy but always shown friendliness and advice when I asked. I was mostly in Timor Leste to work, so Beachside surpassed my expectations and my host Melanie went out of her way to assist me every step of the way even when I was traveling elsewhere in Timor Leste via Whatsapp. In a country like Timor Leste where the tourism infrastructure is still quite simple and in many cases non-existent, having a base like Beachside can make the difference between having a difficult holiday and having a great and memorable one - thanks to Melanie and staff for all your kindness and great hospitality - I'll be back! x

Pousada de Baucau

Perfect.

Reviewed By Julie D

This is the best place to stay in Timor Leste at this point in time. Ask for a room in the ‘new wing’ and it will cost you $90 for 2 people including a full hot breakfast. The room is very comfortable with all the usual amenities you would expect in a western 4 or 5 star hotel - plenty of big, good quality towels, bathroom amenities, crisp clean sheets and great air conditioning. The rooms have fridges but no mini bar or ice and no tea or coffee making facilities but there is a supermarket on the street just outside of the hotel and the restaurant seems to be always open if you want to buy a cup of tea or coffee. After spending time in Dili this hotel in Baucau is a big step forward in regard to luxury accommodation. There is no elevator - just 2 stories and up a spiral staircase. Pack lightly!

Balibo Fort Hotel

A stopover

Reviewed By Phillipa S S

Having a stopover here while on a drive Baucau-Maliana provided a necessary relief and break. Placed on a strategic location, the fort offers sweeping views of the mountains and valleys and a glorious sunset view. Comfortably furnished, the fort offers accommodation, food and a history of Balibo. They have a warm culture of having guests sit around a cozy outside fire under the stars, with talks and story-telling. There was a peaceful feeling here, despite the violent history that surrounds this fort and the village around it.

Great Location, Poor Diving/Snorkeling Operation

Reviewed By 2021Roland

We recently stayed here for six nights and enjoyed the great views and excellent food. Full credit to Anya in the kitchen. But we were very disappointed by the non-existent diving/snorkeling operation, misunderstandings regarding the pricing for the hiring of a snorkel boat, resulting disagreements over the final bill at the time of check-out and the poorly maintained snorkel boat. It doesn't help that the local staff - whom otherwise try very hard to ensure that guests are happy and deserve full credit for this - speak very little English, and that the owners are based in Dili, and are very difficult to communicate with, as wi-fi and cell phone service are patchy at the best of times. We spent our first night in one of their 2-bedroom villas - which are converted shipping containers - but the noise from the very old and very loud air conditioners, necessitated that we move the following day, to one of their deluxe rooms. Which worked out fine. We're not sure what would have happened, had they been full at the time. Beloi Beach Hotel advertises itself as a dive resort. We'd like to highlight the most important issues that we found with this hotel: 1. Dili-Atauro Island transfer was done with a 15 foot boat, without a safety presentation and internationally accepted safety gear and marine communications equipment. This boat had multiple engine problems about 2/3 of the distance across the strait; which on a 25 km open ocean crossing, was reckless and dangerous. This transfer is advertised on their website as using a 39-foot water taxi. 2. Snorkel boat provided was the same boat used for the transfer, and again, had engine problems; a ridiculously short dive ladder, that was about a third of the length required to be effective for divers/snorkelers, and with a swivel pin that kept breaking, such that the ladder swung under the boat; protruding metal on the side of the boat that ripped several holes in a wetsuit; boat driver who didn't speak any English, who mostly failed to assist us in getting out of the water, and who didn't seem to have much idea of where the best sites were. 3. Absence of dive equipment and photo rooms, where dive/snorkel gear is hung to dry overnight and where notebooks, cameras, batteries, etc, can be charged. 4. Absence of large baskets to store your gear in - had to ask for and got very small baskets - and still had to dry wetsuits over communal chairs. In summary, we found Beloi Beach to be a great place to relax, with great views, food, and bar scene, but a difficult property to dive/snorkel from, as they lack the necessary infrastructure and experienced staff.

Typical tourist trap.

Reviewed By MRyanPhotography

I stopped in on my way from Maubara to Railaco as I was having issues with my phone and was hoping for wifi. I parked my car and walked into the restaurant and was greeted by a friendly staff member. She ushered me out to a table overlooking to the bay. There were a heap of other Malae on the balcony. I ordered an iced coffee, I almost died, $4 when I've been paying 25c locally. My order was mixed up with the larger groups, resulting in a 15min wait for the coffee. I can't comment on the accommodation side of things but the location does seem out of place. The harbour seems very tidal, more of a mangrove than a beach. My suggestion would be to keep driving through to Liquiçá where there is a great beach and more options for dining and accommodation.

Manukoko Rek Guesthouse

Manukoko Rek is a Guest House in a typical village called Vila Maumeta in Ataúro. We're a simple but welcoming business. Our Guest House has a restaurant and our staff is always delighted to help. We have different accommodations in order to meet different customers' needs. In Manukoko Rek you can enjoy the silence of the Island, explore the village and its people or go for a walk on the beach. And, at the end of the day, we will always make sure you feel at home!

Quiet and comfortable, welcoming staff and tasty food.

We had a lovely weekend at Manukoko. It was nice to stay in the quiet village of Vila instead of the tourist hub of Beloi. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will call a tuktuk for you so you can travel to Beloi. They definitely prefer if you can pre-order your meals, and it will cut down your wait time. We paid $15 ea per night for a twin share room with shared bathroom (bucket shower), this included breakfast (which was lovely fresh baked bread, scrambled eggs, a fruit plate and coffee). In our opinion it was much better value for money than some of the other places in Beloi! To book, just call +670 7748 7301, the staff speak English reasonably well. See Brenda's post below for more information.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, nice small breakfast buffet, internet was ok/good for Dili standards, location is decent. This place has some history as a popular restaurant/cafe during the UN transition.
