Covering approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), it is the third- or fourth-largest country by total area, depending on the source consulted. Governed by the Communist Party of China, it exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

Dragonfly

Playing on the European heritage associated with the Tai Kwun complex, Dragonfly creates an ambiance synonymous with the art nouveau styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dragonfly is a comfortable boutique bespoke cocktail lounge and eatery designed by masterful artist Ashely Sutton. Dragonfly presents a cosy ambience of comfort and relaxion in an era of a time gone by.

I love this beautiful art-nouveau styled cocktail bar. If you want a place with wow factor, this is perfect.I’d recommend it even more strongly if you could only guarantee getting in. It’s very small and there is usually a queue. It is cosy and intimate which also means that it can be crowded and noisy but it is so strikingly lovely. The ceiling is a sea of Tiffany styled turquoise lights like dragonfly wings and the bar is a giant human/dragonfly, with wings spreading above the bar counter. Small cast iron dragonflies are dotted around the place, on the tables and bar. It’s a fantastical, sophisticated design created by Ashley Sutton who has done other Hong Kong bars as well ( Iron Fairies and Ophelia). The cocktails are decadent too - Dragon’s Pearls (milk tea, mixed with mandarin, gin, cognac, and tapioca). Most are around HK$120+. It’s probably not the place you will stay for a whole night but it’s perfect for a couple of drinks. We tend to go if we have visitors and our preference now is to go at the start of the night, when we are likely to get a table without waiting. If it is full inside, they may offer tables outside in the covered courtyard (a mix of lounges and high tables and stools). We have sat there before but it doesn't have the same atmosphere or décor and if we can’t get inside, then we tend to go elsewhere now. GETTING THERE: Dragonfly truly is a hidden gem but that also means it can be tricky to find. Persist - it's worth it. The easiest way to get there is from the Mid-Levels escalator. About half-way up (above Hollywood Rd), take the flight of stairs on your left - I've attached a photo. The stairs will lead you into the the old colonial Central Police Station (now the rejuvenated Tai Kwun Heritage Centre). Dragonfly is on ground floor in the old Superintendent’s House.

While my club would fesk out when you show up in sandals and shorts, the Bar area is quite a place of great varietal dressings

Great Leap Brewing Original #6

The brewery that started Beijing's craft beer revolution in 2010 is still pouring some of the best beer around. With as many as 20 beers on tap, and rarely fewer than 17, we've got the largest selection of locally brewed beer on tap in town, nothing in bottles, nothing shipped from across the ocean, just pure, fresh beer. While we don't have food available, we have menus from many of our neighboring restaurants and can help you order great food like pizza, dumplings, kebabs, or simple Chinese food.

For beer travellers, Great Leap Brewing's original location is a must-visit gem hidden away in the depths of the Gulou hutongs. Situated in a converted courtyard house, GLB #6 is best visited in fair weather to take advantage of its tranquil beer garden. While enjoying a full-flavoured brew, relaxing in its leafy shade, you couldn't be more removed from the fact that you're in the heart of a metropolis of more than 21.5 million people. GLB #6 offers 20 taps pouring a diverse range of signature and seasonal beer. On your first visit, it's best to start with a flight or two to find a brew that particularly suits your fancy at the moment, then savour a pint while you drink in the unique atmosphere of this 110-year-old hutong residence. Besides spicy peanuts, GLB #6 does not serve food. Nevertheless, there are plenty of food options in the neighbourhood, which leaves you with three choices: plan a visit here after a meal, before a meal, or you can peruse menus from local eateries at GLB #6 to have food delivered to you. If you decide to eat somewhere else after a session here, you might consider getting a growler of beer to go so that you can still enjoy a local craft beer with your meal should the restaurant not offer any. Remember, drinking in public is legal in China, so keep in mind that you could also fill a growler here to enjoy a nice brew while, say, renting a paddle boat on nearby Houhai.
