ALQA - Gallery of Andean Expressions

ALQA is an art gallery focused on the conservation and dissemination of the traditional artistic expressions of the indigenous high andean communities. Our work not only represents an exquisite curation, but also a meticulous research that allows, through a considerable historical and social burden, to create a chain of relationships between all the pieces on exhibition, allowing the recontextualization and recovery of them in order to reinforce and place value on the cultural identity of the artists and their communities of origin.

You've got to check out ALQA Gallery if you're in Ollantaytambo! The staff there is so very friendly. The vibe is chill, no one is there to push any sales on you. They have beer on tap to sip while you explore the wide variety of artwork and hand made goods sourced from Andean towns and villages located throughout the Sacred Valley. They have one of a kind photographic prints, sculptures, beautifully made hats and much more!

Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco

Reviewed By AuroraAlaska - Denali National Park and Preserve, United States

I highly recommend visiting this wonderful non-profit organization! The mission of the Center is to aid in the survival of Cusqueñan textile traditions and to provide support to the indigenous people who create them. The Center works with ten weaving communities in the Cusco region on a fair-trade basis to help rescue traditions and promote the weavers and their work. Weavers were on-site for demonstrations during my visit. All fiber is hand-spun, naturally hand died and hand-woven. I have never seen a finer quality of weaving work in all my global travels! I purchased a table runner that is nothing short of a magnificent work of art. Some previous reviewers complained that prices were too expensive. I beg to differ. Prices ranged from a few dollars to hundreds, depending on the size and intricacy of the work. I paid $150 for an item that took many weeks if not months to make. I would not be able to purchase a handmade item of this high quality back home for even ten times the price. You can not compare these weavers fine work to the cheap, synthetically died, machine woven souvenirs you find at the local market stalls!

This is the best-kept secret of Cusco, Peru. Not to be missed even if it means giving up one more Inca ruin! This is beyond weaving -- it's pure art. Maximo Laura is indeed a national treasure. What an amazing talent. There is an on-site weaver you can observe creating a new masterpiece. Really incredible.
