Top 10 African food in Kampala, Central Region, Uganda

March 3, 2020 Natalie Tallman

Reviews on African food in Kampala, Central Region, Uganda. Near the banks of Lake Victoria, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is a lively city with a long history. Before the British, the city was the capital of the Buganda Kingdom, and remains so to this day. The city sits on several hills, each housing an important government or religious building. Kasubi Hill is the home of the Kasubi Tombs, a sacred burial ground of Buganda Kings. The Uganda Museum sits atop Kololo Hill, and features a hands-on collection of traditional musical instruments.

The Roots Restaurant

For my last night in Kampala I wanted to indulge in one final local meal. The restaurant has a beautiful garden and the service is exceptional. Food ranges from my all time favorite Luwombo( choices of goat, chicken or beef) which comes with very generous portions of yam, matoke, sweet potatoes and veggies. They do have many other local food options. Looking forward to coming back to the Roots

Amagara Cafe Bistro

We went to Amagara hoping for some authentic Ugandan food. Unfortunately, the menu was quite Western. Fortunately, they had a buffet on offer which showcased a few more African items. Overall, the food was nice but not amazing. The service was borderline - almost leaning a bit to the bad side, but they were at least trying. I don't think I would necessarily go back, however, given the numerous choices in Kampala!!

I do go to Bravo often, it's a good cafe compared to what's in the area. I do recommend going and trying different things on the menu. The service is really good. The food needs to be upgraded a bit. I have tried about 6 dishes and they are not wow to me. But it's worth a try and I still go there often.

I visited 2k on Monday for lunch and had the special goat and matoke which came with a variety of delicious salads too. The waiter went to a lot of effort to accommodate my specific request which was so kind (as I wanted g nut sauce too). I can't remember his name but he deserves a promotion! He made my last meal in Uganda. My meal was 20k, huge portion and delicious. The place to go for good Ugandan food.

The Lakes Restaurant

Reviewed By Safariafficionado

During my recent staycation at the Kampala Serena I enjoyed three breakfasts, a brunch and one dinner and the only downside was, as we say in German, Die Qual der Wahl. Plenty of choices both hot and cold dishes, all well prepared and presented and especially on a day when breakfast is followed by brunch, dinner can be skipped as there will be no space to put anything into oneself but perhaps a Jaegermeister. For those who prefer a glass of bubbly to start the day, that is available too and on the house! Arguably the best offering is the Friday Seafood Night with prawns, sea fish and lake fish, leaving nothing to be desired. I highly recommend The Lakes for visitors to the city who want to try eating out because here no one leaves disappointed. Service by the way was impeccable, plates cleared when signalled and cutlery replaced and every new pot of tea comes with a fresh cup ... Serena for me stands for quality and the best there is in Eastern Africa.

A desire to have South Indian cuisine and Indian street food prompted us to visit this establishment. The restaurant has a secure parking area and we parked as advised. The staff directed us to a table of our choice. We were a little worried when we realized that two large parties were already underway and normally this would compromise service to the other patrons but we were wrong. The Manager and staff were exceptional. Our menus came, orders were taken and meals arrived quickly and well made.Despite a varied selection, food was excellent,we could not fault anything.South Indian thali simply exceptional, chicken tikka Masala with butter nan, fantastic. The Pau bhaji was well made and presented. The accompaniments and papadums very nice.Overall,it was an exceptional evening with very good food. Thanks for your visit Mr Ashraf and writing a review for us. Your words do matter for us and support the team for their efforts to make your dining experience memorable. We wait for your next visit and hope it will soon.
