Started in 1914, the church is located on a high hill which gives commanding views of Goteborg, especially Goteborg harbor. The church itself has an interior reminiscent of a Viking Stave church, with a beautifully timbered ceiling, and timbers which exhibit the work of skilled craftsmen.

A must-see in the area. We visited Varnhem because my boyfriend LOVES the Arn trilogy by Jan Guillou, and he was not disappointed. A great church that differs from a lot of cathedrals and churches in the Nordics as the architecture is not so continental, but more Northern in its look. A lot to see, including the grave of Birger Jarl (a headlight of the trip for my BF), along with the Kata grave on the hill overlooking the monastery and the church. Also: remember to have a cup of coffee and cake at the café. Check out when the guided tours are in advance - we didn't have the time. Tip: visit Västra Götalands museum to see the short documentaries about the history of the church and/or Kata & Kätill in Skara if you have the time. Also: visit Gudhem ruins too.
