Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja)

Reviewed By Sonnymao

It's not that impressive from the outside (after seeing all the wonderful churches in Europe you tend to be too hard-to-please!) But once you step through the massive bronze doors (recent additions from Pope John Paul II's visit in 1992). Wondrous frescoes and artwork welcome you - Pink marble and frescoes by the Italian Baroque master Giulio Quaglio glow inside Ljubljana’s St. Nicholas Cathedral. It is a crime not to see this stunningly gorgeous church when you are in Ljubljana. And admission is free!

Franciscan Church (Franciskanska cerkev)

Reviewed By periandro - Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Upon reaching Prešernov trg the stunning view of the Church of the Annunciation is something which may make one feel enchanted. On the same site where the church stands there was an older one which was replaced by that subject matter of the present review. The latter was built in the second half of the seventeenth century with the exception of the façade which was built in the aforesaid style in the first decade of the eightenth century. The nice belfry towers were also built later than the main building. The pinkish red colour of the façade and its majestic pilasters topped by ionic style capitals in the lower part and Corinthian capitals in the upper part show that one finds himself before a baroque jewel. Such a red colour is symbolic of the Franciscan order. The sides of that upper part are decorated with volutes and on the top of the front façade over a clock there is a statue of Our Lady of Loreto made by beaten copper by Matej Schreiner. It's a very nice sculpture. Likewise, the other statues placed in the three niches carved in the façade are nice ones. They represent God Father, in the niche situated above the main stone portal, and an angel and the Virgin, respectively, in the side niches. The temple concerned stands at a dominant position on Prešernov trg and it remains so in people's minds after leaving the mentioned square. The stone entrance staircase is very impressive as well as the wooden door which dates back to the 19th century. Next to the church there is a Franciscan monastery built in the thirteenth century. Once inside one is dumbfounded by the beauty and grandiosity of the interior. It's a one nave church with six side altars and a very large choir. The high altar, designed by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba is splendid. The painting in the middle of the altarpiece portrays a scene of the Annunciation. The three pillars on each side of the painting respectively support the upper structure of that altarpiece in the middle of which there is a stunning white sculpture representing God Father. The whole baroque ensemble in which that altarpiece consists is both marvellous and monumental. All the other paintings are also really beautiful especially the frescoes on the vault by Matej Sternen, carried out in the mid thirties of the twentieth century. The most conspicuous ones depict scenes of the Crucifixion and of the Assumption of Mary. The organ furniture made of dark brown wood and gilded ornaments, with a clock on the very top, is a real masterpiece as well as the pultit. On sunny days there is a superb luminosity inside which makes one feel blessed by the amazing atmosphere there existing and therefore enjoy in a more positive way all the artworks which can be contemplated in that temple. It's therefore a place which must be visited when in the beautiful city of Ljubljana.

Church of the Assumption

This 17th century church appears to float in the middle of the town's lake.

Reviewed By wendhmagz - Waihi, New Zealand

I love visiting churches on my travels around the world, not because of any religious significance but the churches themselves are so beautiful. The Church of the Assumption of Mary is no exception. It stands on Bled Island, a tiny tear-shaped island in the middle of beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia. The present church was built near the end of the 17th century, though there has been a church here since the 9th century. The main altar with its stunning gold-plated carving dates from 1747. The church has a 52-metre bell tower and there is a Baroque stairway with 99 steps leading from the lake up to the church and this dates from 1655. It is free to visit the church but there’s a small fee of €6 to climb the bell tower. The traditional transportation to Bled Island is by a wooden boat known as a pletna which seats 20 people. The word pletna is derived from the Bavarian German word plätten 'flat-bottomed boat'. The boats are made by hand and are identifiable by their brightly coloured awnings. The trip to the island takes around 20 minutes and the cost is €12 per person. I loved Lake Bled and its surroundings and I look forward to a return visit at some stage. I highly recommend you visit this area if you are travelling in that part of the world – you won’t be disappointed!

Little Castle

The Chapel on the Mali Grad hill is one of the major cultural and artistic monuments, which falls within the greatest creations of Slovenian architectural heritage. It is connected with the legend of stingy countess Veronika, who is also depicted in the Kamnik count of arms. In 1986 Mali Grad was put under heritage protection with an Ordinance designating old town core of Kamnik.
