The Golconda fort has a chequered history from the 12th century to the 19th century. The history is rich with intricate power struggles interspersed with architectural commissions of the Kakatiya [Hindu] Bahmani, Qutub shahi and later the Nizams. It was fascinating to note architectural similarities with modern day Iran’s architecture with the stunning view from the top of the fort reminding me of the ancient ruins of Rome! The tombs of the Qutub shahi kings are worth a visit as the architecture is grand and is a mix of Persian and local influences.I was pleasantly surprised to find two tombs of the physicians of the time [Geelani] and a couple of tombs of the dancing girls of the time amongst the tombs of kings and queens! I skipped the palaces and rushed through the Salar Jung museum as I was short on time. John [the guide] was excellent .His knowledge of the complex history of the region and his ability to relate it to the monuments was par excellence. Despite 27 years as a guide, he still remains passionate in his job. He was punctual, respectful and mindful of the fact that I would need frequent water breaks in the 40degree C heat . For a day, John transported me back in time to marvel at the spirit and endeavours of eight centuries of rulers in the Deccan [anglicised name for Dakshin-south]. Please carry your water as there are no water arrangements at the top of the fort. The fort is being repaired in sections and could do with more signages and tourist information plates.
