Things to do in Tangier, Tangier-Tetouan Region: The Best Museums

September 10, 2021 Kelli Reichel

Located on the Strait of Gibraltar where Africa meets Europe, Tangier has long held strategic importance. Ruled through the centuries by waves of conquerors including Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs and Portuguese, the city is more than two and a half millennia old, making it one of North Africa's most ancient. The medina, kasbah, bazaars and souks are among the country's most vibrant, and the beaches are excellent. In the last century, Tangier became a hot spot for the international jet set.

I had the most amazing experience at Bleu de Fes. They are so knowledgeable and nice to work with. I purchased two rugs my first visit to them, went shopping around town and to other stores and loved them so much I went back the next day for more! A must stop on your visit to Tangier!!! I left the store with new friends and rugs

We were taken to this place by our guide, from a ship. It is filled with wonderful colourful rugs and pottery and scarves and ceramics and metal work. It is blindingly gorgeous and overwhelming. But I had an idea that I wanted to buy a rug in Morocco. so I went to the area where the rugs are and was immediately cornered by the sales guy. I looked at lots of rugs and saw one I adored. 2.75 metres by 1.75 metres. I said How much? The answer 3,500 Euros - I gasped in horror and said I dont have that much money! He said how much do you have? I said I have less than !,000 Euros - and not here - the credit card I have does not have that much on it. We haggled and argued and I walked away throwing up my arms. Very dramatic. In the end we agreed on 1,000 Euros and that the guide would come back to the boat with me and get the remaining money and bring the EFTPOS machine with him! Hilarious. So accompanied by a very tall Moroccan man complete in his Djellaba we went back to the boat and did the transaction. I also I asked for the fringe to be cut off the rug (fringes on rugs get grubby and are chewed by dogs and cats and small children) and for it to be posted to me free of charge, which was agreed, and they gave me two scarves as well (free(?) They said it would take three weeks. it took a month but arrived today!! Am so happy. I would be happy to deal with these people again - but get everything written down - get receipts - take pictures of what you are buying so you can send them back to show which rug it was you had bought if there is ever a muddle. You have to be patient and careful and talk slowly. Double check everything. GET A RECEIPT. ENSURE THAT THE ADDRESS ON THE DOCUMENTATION IS CORRECT. I live in Tasmania, Australia - at the other end of the world from Tangier. So if the rug can get to me - it can go anywhere.
