Things to do in Stockholm, Stockholm County: The Best City Tours

July 8, 2021 Ying Subia

The capital city of Sweden combines modern attractions with historic charm. Kick off your stay with visits to Stockholm’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Royal Palace Drottningholm (the residence of the royal family) and the magical Skogskyrkogården, or Woodland Cemetery. Stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Town and over the picturesque bridges that span the city’s canals. The 19th-century Skansen was the world’s first open-air museum and is still a premier place to learn about Swedish history.

We’re fortunate that Thomas was our guide in Stockholm. We had been planning this trip for a while and we finally made it. During the planning process, which was a long time in the making, Thomas was helpful and patient all along the way and always prompt in his response to my email. He provided us with an airport pick up and a private city tour on a subsequent day. We wanted an enjoyable and relaxing day of sightseeing around Stockholm and that’s what Thomas delivered! Thomas was so knowledgeable and all together great company. We enjoyed the information, stories, points of interests visited and his humor. His casual and informative style was just perfect, with history made interesting. He pointed out iconic homes, defined historic buildings, provided anecdotes throughout and gave us good insight into Swedish culture. We hit the city highlights, drove through many of the neighborhoods, visited various islands and as a private tour, he offered flexibility regarding the overall itinerary, timing and drop off point. We visited the Vasa Museum and Thomas guided us inside. The museum is already special, but with his guidance, he made the history of Vasa come alive. The museum is not to be missed and was made better with Thomas’ knowledge and commentary to enhance the experience. Thank you, Thomas, for your gracious and wonderful service. You also captured our perfect family photo from a scenic vantage point (although the weather wasn’t cooperating much). You made our short stay in Stockholm a true delight!

Today the Stockholm Subway has more than 90 stations that feature art created by over 150 artists. Although they all form part of the same subway system, the stations and the art they contain are all very different. In 1957 T-Centralen was the first station to gain art, which means that we today can find art from six decades in the Stockholm subway. It’s not only the art but also the architecture, which makes the Stockholm subway appreciated and famous way beyond Sweden’s borders. Ever since the early 1970's most of the stations have been built as what we call cave stations. The rock face is covered with a layer of sprayed concrete, which follows the shape of the rock, giving an illusion of a station in a cave. The artists were working in long-term partnerships with architects and engineers to create complete environments rather than individual artworks. The cave stations are found on the blue Metro line and partly on the red Metro line.
