Things to do in Shanghai, Shanghai Region: The Best Spas & Wellness

May 22, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

The largest city in China is also its most cosmopolitan, offering visitors a chance to experience the past, present, and future all at once. The Huangpu River splits Shanghai into two districts: Pudong and Puxi. The Pudong skyline looks like it was ripped from the Jetsons, with the bulbous Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower looking a bit like a two headed lollipop. On the Puxi side, you can walk the Bund riverside district to get a taste of old Shanghai.

The ambience of The Sanctuary literally lives up to its name. I booked the massage as my first holiday itinerary after 5-hour red eye flight. The therapist was skillful and the massage was rejuvenating, I caught up with the much needed sleep! The entire premises is clean and neat. Toilet is five star hotel standard. Well done The Sanctuary Spa team!

I’ve made it a goal to find great massage therapists in the cities I frequently visit. For Shanghai, it’s Jenna Zhao at Wonderhand Spa. Arriving at the appointed time or a few minutes early, Jenna prepares the room and then delivers a 100% professional and thoroughly relaxing massage. The clock starts when the massage starts, not when she arrives. She’s comfortable working in silence or engaging in conversation - it’s up to you. During the massage she finds every knot and tight muscle. The result is amazing. Her skills, the convenience of in-hotel delivery of her services, and the price make her not only a terrific value, but a great experience overall. 100% recommended!

Secret Garden Spa (Nanjing East Road)

Reviewed By terot - Espoo, Finland

Before traveling to Shanghai I had taken notice of this place but it was not even close to where I thought that it would be. We actually found the place when we saw a sign outside that there would be massage on the fifth floor. The location is wonderful on the Nanjing East Road, and it's just next to our hotel, Sofitel Shanghai Hyland. On the fifth floor there is a wonderful massage place. They welcome you politely and there are lots of different massages to choose from. The Hawaiian massage, 60 minutes, is wonderful. The foot massage, as many others have written, is probably the best foot massage I have ever had. For the first ten minutes or so they massage your back and shoulders, and then they give you a wonderful foot massage. It's not the cheapest possible massage, but you'll feel wonderful after any treatment. I'll definitely go back over and over again.

Floatasian Float Spa

Reviewed By LavenderFive - Shanghai, China

I've been to the Floatasian Spa twice and have a package that will allow me to float on a regular basis. This place is fabulous! I think that floating is as relaxing as having a massage and perhaps even more so because of complete silence and solitude in the floatation tank. You have an hour to float in the dense salty water (which makes it effortless to float) and you can start by listening to a short meditation or some nature music and then fade into silence. The silence and the darkness lead to a meditative limbo state where you really unwind and quiet your mind. At the end of the float, all tension in my neck and shoulders is gone. The spa serves up spicy ginger drinks and cucumber water, along with coconut chips, and you leave feeling completely rejuvenated. Highly recommended!

Yu Massage(People's square store)

Reviewed By Barbara_RochMN - Rochester, United States

I had Katty (#11) and she was absolutely superb. Though we could not communicate due to my language barrier she instinctively knew the areas of concern and did an amazing job. I believe she has been a medical masseuse so I definitely was lucky getting her as a walk-in customer. The staff was all very friendly and professional and the facility very relaxing, clean and quiet. I highly recommend the hour and a half service with oil and this beautiful spa!
