Things to do in Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro (RJ): The Best Night Tours

April 14, 2022 Diedre Savory

With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

Visiting Rio, we wanted to experience the more authentic nightlife around town, but were concerned about our safety, so when this came up, it sounded like the answer, wasn’t expensive and we gave it a try. We met at a hostel and the organisers were very welcoming and sorted us a beer. We then met the rest of the group as they arrived and learned how to make Caipirinhas before getting into groups and competing to make the best ones. Naturally we were drinking them! We then walked to the station and took the tube to Lapa. Bottles of shots were brought with us, but not wanting to be completely trolleyed before we even got there, my only gripe is we’d have preferred beers for the journey as there’s a fair bit of walking/stopping for photos and we were getting parched. We managed to get two bottles from a street cart as we walked in the end. From there we got to drink, see bars, see and feel the vibe of Lapa, get some great pics on the famous steps, dance in a samba club to a live band, go to a dance club, meet some great people we’ve stayed in touch with and have some real fun. Our guides looked after us, kept an eye out to ensure we were, and felt, safe, and made sure no one got left behind, whilst giving us the space to be tourists! Great night! I’d do it again! Though next time I’d bring a beer for the train????????

I had the pleasure to have Clara as my tour guide. Her vast knowledge and ability to communicate them are amazing, although at times I wasn't really sure what she was saying as she was speaking very fast in English. Still the tour and her passion deserve a 5-star rating! :) She was very patient with all the questions we had and gave us as much advice as possible regarding our travels in Brazil. I had much deeper understanding of Rio history and culture thanks to her!

no where does it tell you that you will be on a BUS for over 2 1/2 hours - and then another 2 1/2 hours (it took us 3 1/2 hours because of traffic) to get back. so, 6 hours on a bus to see 4 little islands - only one with a tiny decent beach (and you got to stay there less than 30 minutes) 2 to jump in the water, and one island to eat - no swimming there - very dirty beach. can't believe we wasted 13 hours to do this tour - a complete rip off - when there is so much in rio. - wish i could give it zero stars

The show features Ziriguidum from the Northeast, the Amazon with its Folklore, Bahia with its mystical rituals and Capoeira, and Rio de Janeiro with its bohemian Lapa neighborhood, samba dance halls and the performance of the legendary Tricksters as well as the luxurious Carnival, with fantastic drummers and beautiful women.

What a fantastic time we had!! We were in São Paulo for 4 days and decided to fly up to do a one day trip to Rio. This layover tour is perfect. We arrived at 8:30am and flew back out at 7pm. Atila, our guide, picked us up right on time. We went to Corcovado, The Steps, the Modern Cathedral, a churascarria lunch, the beaches, and the Sugar Loaf.
