Things to do in Pretoria, Gauteng: The Best Tours

May 28, 2021 Giuseppe Pratt

Pretoria is a vision of purple, thanks to its plethora of blossoming trees that gave the South African metropolis its nickname: Jacaranda City. Give in to the animal magnetism of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, then get up close and personal with the big, bad kitties of the Cheetah Research and Breeding Centre. The buildings of Pretoria reflect diverse architectural styles and influences, creating a unique urban landscape.

Stephen was the BEST tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable about the animals & the park itself. We had a very fun small group & were able to see many different types of animals. Stephen provided us with extra perks like the Lion & Wild dog feedings and the Wonder Mine. The Wonder Mine was an unexpected occurance I didn’t know I had been missing! It was beautiful and unreal. Everything about the day was great; from the giraffe and Springbok, to the baby warthogs (so adorable) and the wildebeest! Every single part of this trip was nothing short of amazing! Thank you Stephen for your warm smile and knowledge of the park, animals, & Jozi in general. I will definitely share your info with my travel group! I wish you much success in the future - you truly, truly deserve it!

Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the lions in the Kruger National Park to the iconic Table Mountain in the Cape, takes some beating. Enjoy the Country’s sweeping valleys of the Winelands, Cape Town’s jumping nightlife, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers or KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park which alone has five distinct ecosystems, attracting both zebras and dolphins - there is something here for any person with any interest of any age. Although the country has its fair share of problems, South Africans are some of the most upbeat, welcoming and humorous folk you’ll encounter anywhere, from farmers in the rural north who tell you to drive safely on those dirt roads, to Khayelitsha kids who wish you molo (‘good morning’ in Xhosa).

I have to first admit my ignorance to the majesty of South Africa and all it has to offer. The Real South Africa....made sure I left educated, from everything from the countries history to their modern day marvels. Spending the day on safari seeing animals large and small, shopping at Sandton Mall, eating Dinner in the Sky to just relaxing poolside after a massage! Something as simple as the sunrise will take your breath away! Kudos to SA and all it’s people for for uniting as one and turning their country around after the apartheid. Not only did the Real South Africa make my trip spectacular beyond what I could have imagined they made it so carefree and easy for me, literally taking care of all the details, coordination....all I had to do was be ready! I look forward to my next visit! Until then....

My mother and I were collected from the airport by Pastor. She was in a wheelchair due to a back problem. Pastor was polite, patient, helpful, and very interesting to chat with due to his knowledge of the country and region. He also took us back to the airport. At check-in, when I realized that I'd packed some disallowed items, I called him and he came straight back. Within 45 minutes, he'd delivered the items to my sister to deal with.

We had a great three-night stay at Horseback Africa. The calm and open environment allows you to feel like you are hours away from the busy city life. The horseback safari is amazing and there are plenty of animals to see; our guides were also incredibly knowledgable on the animals (and even the plants) we encountered on the trail. I would also recommend the animal interaction tour!! The staff and hosts are friendly and helpful, and I would highly recommend staying here a few nights for a short getaway from the city.

This tour is private just for you with our guide. Johannesburg is the only major city in the world built because of an underground resource, gold instead of a river or port. For over 100 years it was the world's biggest producer of the yellow metal. Johannesburg and the township of Soweto together make up arguably Africa's most interesting city, least of all because of the vast diversities in race, culture, and wealth of its inhabitants. During this full-day private tour, your informative guide highlights places and events that changed the cultural and political landscape of South Africa and in some cases the world. See the former homes (both old and recent) of Nelson Mandela and spend time exploring the Apartheid Museum. Your customizable itinerary includes lunch on vibrant Vilakazi Street in Soweto. Changes can be made to add going down a gold mine, seeing Gandhis home, who, during his 20 years in South Africa he became the human rights activist we know him as today.

Inclusions: Hotel pickup and drop-off, Local taxes, Professional guide, Bottled water, Lunch

Exclusions: Alcoholic drinks (available to purchase), Souvenirs and curios, Gratuities
