June 27, 2021 Renato Branum

Piran (Slovene pronunciation: [piˈɾáːn] ( listen); Italian: Pirano [piˈraːno]) is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town has much medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative centre of the local area and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but was replaced by Slovene as demographics shifted.

Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg)

Reviewed By PeterK711 - Griffith, Australia

What was once part of the harbour is now a beautiful town square full of shiny white marble. At the centre stands the statue of Giuseppe Tartini - the famous violinist, bon in Piran. The square serves as the mid point between the harbour below and the church above. A great place for a quiet beverage at any time of the day.

Piran Town Walls

Reviewed By ElizabethG372 - Durango, United States

The walk uphill is absolutely worth it. Walking on this historic segment of the city wall not only imparts a sense of history, but it also provides great views of the historic town. Reasonably priced and a must for visitors. By walking a little farther uphill from the walls, we found a beautiful stone-paved walkway back down into town. The little cafe by the entrance has restrooms, and provided a nice place to stop for beverages after our tour of the walls.

We happened upon this lovely cloisters and its associated church while tracking down the various ancient and historic churches of Piran. The Cloisters are absolutely stunningly lovely, serene, and timelessly evocative. There is no more serene and elegant spot we have found in Slovenia.

This small working Adriatic harbor features pleasure and working boats, benches, tiny lighthouse type lighting devices at the entrance, and a walled and sidewalked promenade along the long area of docks. This is one of a number of wonderful resting spots in Piran to watch dawn, dusk, and weather and lighting changes over the Adriatic. Others include the Adriatic front and back sudes of Our Lady of Health Church and the walking area along St Grorge's Church, which looks DC own kn yhe city as nd coast. This free, safe, and open-to-all without fees Harbor area is near Tartini Square and frequented by sailors, tourists, locals, and photographers. Don't miss it or the coastal walk ftom this Harbor to and around Our Lsdy of Health.

Church of St. Francis of Assisi

Reviewed By peetajohn - Norton, United Kingdom

The church is on the hill overlooking the town and its location is superb. It dominates the town (alongside the adjacent tower) and there are lovely views over the town. Inside the church there is, as you would expect, plenty of statues and paintings and altars. It is also nicely maintained. The outside of the church is not very exciting, as the tourist photos show - it is the inside and its viewpoint that particularly make it worth a visit.
