The Irthlingborough to Thrapston Walk

Reviewed By shanes236 - Northamptonshire, United Kingdom

My daughter and I began our walk from the Rushden Lakes, we have never started from there previously. This 2 miles stretch to the Stanwick lakes /Station rd entrance was perhaps the most attractive as it winds from left to right before finding the old railway line. This part of the walk took us about 30 minutes then we began the second stretch, which is the stanwick lakes to Ringstead which again is a distance of 2 miles. After passing the fishing/ marina area we continued the longest part of our walk passing Woodford lock where there is an excellent tearoom. We continued past Denford locks and crossing the Nene way before hugging the River Nene until we arrived at the arched bridge at Islip. We estimated this final stretch to be about 4 miles. The Nene way reappears next to the Rose and Crown at Islip and then continues through many villages and onto Wadenhoe. This will be our next stretch to negotiate. After having breakfast in the attractive town of Thrapston we returned home after a 10 miles walk. Visited 29th August 2020

The Thrapston-Islip walk

We really enjoyed our 2 lakeside walks here. The birdlife was plentiful and varies and the somewhat muddy path encircling one of the larger lakes gave one a sense of achievement. We covered the 4 mile route around the lake from the Woolpack Inn in just over an hour including stops for photos.

The Railway Conductor is a great old fashioned model railway shop. It is stocked to the brim with rolling stock and scenic materials/buildings in both OO and N Gauge especially items you may fine difficult to find elsewhere. The also stock Airfix and other brands of plastic model kits. It is well worth seeking out. The staff are friendly and will happily find items for you if you can't find them yourself. The prices are reasonable and a little lower than the price tags would suggest, a discount is applied at the till, and are in line with their on line prices. An absolute gem, I shall be back.

Historic tunnels, that made up the disused Northampton to Market Harborough Railway line, that is now part of the Brampton Way. Well worth a visit, if your in the area.
