The falls are absolutely stunning. Quiet and even when busy, there was plenty of space and opportunity for photos. The views were stunning all round. We were lucky to see Mt Fuji on the day we visited.

If you enjoy nature hikes and beautiful cascades of water then I highly reccomend adding a visit to Ryuuku Falls. Most pictures do not actually do it justice as it is much taller than it appears on film. The hike through the thick Japanese forest is also quite breathtaking and not overly difficult.

The falls were majestic. We went on a Tuesday morning and it was pretty quiet, with only 2 other couples beside us. We spent quite some time on the bridge just enjoying the spectacular sides of nature (ps you can see 2 smaller waterfalls there too!) It was easy to get to, just a few mins walk to get to the actual falls and no need for a long hike or many steps. Definitely a must-go!

Best accessible by car or bus. Also a popular pilgrimage if you are still fit enough. First stop is usually a parking lot on a slope opposite the falls from where you walk down many stairs of old stone slabs (handrail) to a platform below the falls. The torii of the small Shinto Shrine there is the standard fpto backdrop for the tour group. Tipp: at the rightmost window of the Shrine there is a little door. For a spiritual contribution of only ¥300 you can from there coimb up some additional steps to two platforms mich closer to the falls and with VERY few tourists (the groups don't have the time). As a matter of fact, for more than ten minutes we were there alone! After that you have to climb up back to the parking lot. From there it is strongly recommended to go up further to both the Buddhist Temple with its beautiful Pagoda and to another (bigger) Shinto Shrine. The view if the falls from there is piceless (If you cannot or do not want to climb up there, parking is available for ¥800)

We did the walk to Naena on Xmas day from Akakura Onsen as the snow was bad so we didn’t fancy snowboarding. It’s a pretty easy walk. And you can walk the back roads from Ikenotaira - from the trail around the Imori-ike pond. We were shocked to run into a family (30+) of snowmonkeys around Suginohara. You can catch the bus back (if it’s running) and stop at Ikenotaira SuperOnsen. Nice day out exploring the area.
