Things to do in Istanbul, Turkey: The Best Ferries

March 25, 2022 Veronika Gaddis

The mosques, bazaars, and Turkish baths of Istanbul could keep you happily occupied for your entire trip: an eyeful of breathtaking architecture here, a good-natured haggle over a carpet there. Kick your trip off at the awe-inspiring Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque), which is visible from many points of the city. Stroll the Galata Bridge and stop by the Miniaturk Park to see its tiny artifacts. The Grand Bazaar has thousands of shops to browse, while the Egyptian Bazaar is a fragrant trove of spices and fruits.

IDO Ferry

You can take IDO ferry from Yenikapi or BUDO from Eminonu. Though, I preferred IDO because of ease of access, convenience and price. You can try to buy ferry tickets online or just purchasing at the counters. I faced no queues and it was easy to purchase. - Infant/child (0-5 years old) free. ~Yenikapi ferry station is not huge but it has sufficient facilities available including nice food places like Mcdonalds, café Nero, sandwich station, Midye (Turkish seafood), shops etc. - Straightforward & very easy to find where your ferry will depart from. - Smooth ride of 1hour & 40minutes, but you won’t realise the time as there were nice views during our boat ride. - Food, drinks & toilet available on board. ~ So, we took IDO ferry from Yenikapi, Istanbul to get to Bursa. However, the ferry stops in Mudanya and from there you will have to take a taxi or public transportation to Bursa. Since we were a family of 7 people (including an infant), we decided to take a taxi. To our surprise at the ferry port there were individuals who organise various tours including short trips or simply a taxi ride to Bursa regardless of the number of passengers travelling. They were part of travel organisations that arrange various types of tours and trips in & around Bursa. I Shall leave their details below. ~I spoke to Muhammed Menge, he was friendly, calm, understanding and speaks English. Besides, out of respect and appreciation utilise some Turkish phrases. - As far as I can remember, it was a VIP type vehicle so a 10 seater. This costed us 100 TL each way. Normally, they charge 150TL and possibly they may have increased the price now. - It was a pleasant and very smooth ride each way and on both occasions the drivers were amazing. We reached our destination in maximum 45 minutes. - So, from IDO ferry to Tophane approximately 45 min (FYI no traffic) & from Ulu cami (Grand Mosque) to Ido ferry roughly 45 minutes (FYI Driver drove fast). We had the time of our life in Bursa, thoroughly enjoyed it and had the opportunity to explore Mudanya, which had an amazing sea view. # I will leave there details below so you all can make use of their service, I was completely satisfied with their service. - Öz Doğa Turizm - *Muhammed Menge 00905392519452

Karakoy Iskelesi

We did our own Bosphorus cruise by getting the regular ferry across to Karakoy. In our case the was the point and at 5TL each way was a real bargain. We wandered around Karakoy people watching which was very pleasant. We used the ferry from the nearest quay to Galatea bridge on the Golden Horn and the ticket machines are easily converted to English. All simplicity and and an intercontinental voyage ticked off!
