April 1, 2022 Venice Greaves

Hokkaido (北海道, Hokkaidō, literally "Northern Sea Circuit") (Japanese: [hokkaꜜidoː] ( listen)), formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso, is the second largest island of Japan, and the largest and northernmost prefecture. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu. The two islands are connected by the undersea railway Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city. About 43 km north of Hokkaido lies Sakhalin Island, Russia, whereas to its east and north-east are the disputed Kuril Islands.

Banei Tokachi Obihiro Horse Race Track

Reviewed By simon_and_emma69 - Workington, United Kingdom

Drawn to this from some of the guide book reviews. We are not big horse racing fans or even regular betters but this was a brilliant event to visit. We even broke our journey Sapporo to Kushiro just to come here for a couple of hours and weren't disappointed. Make sure you check online first for the event timetable (racing is limited to weekends) and there's also a very helpful guide to ease you through the betting process - all quite straightforward. The racing itself is fascinating - my wife described it as horse drag racing in slow motion. There's quite a bit of pausing as the horses need a break between the hump sections of the track and the riders have to make sure they stay in lane. Even watching the small train system to get the sleds back to the start line was interesting. If you're passing Obihiro at the weekend I would suggest this is a must see stopover - you will never see anything quite like it anywhere else!
