Things to do in Hanoi, Vietnam: The Best Food Tours

November 24, 2021 Kiesha Cripe

The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

Old Quarter Nightlife : Other parts of Hanoi might quiet down at night but the Old Quarter is where night owls head to. Street food & drink vendors, ( Night market on Friday, Saterday, Sunday), live music, discos, clubs and bars as well as decent karaoke joints are the norm here.Though the numbers might be limited compared to other large Asian cities, what’s on offer here is well enough to keep people from all walks of life happy and university students, office staff and expats are among the friendly crowds.

Loved our food tour! Our group of friends (we were a total of 4 couples) had such a great time. Brian (the person behind the FB chat) and Nikkita (our tour guide) were SUPER!!! Brian listened to our special requests (food preferences/dietary restrictions) and offered great suggestions. Brian was prompt to reply to all my questions and was very easy to communicate with as he is a native English writer. Nikkita was punctual, warm and welcoming. I particularly loved that she really took the time to share her beautiful culture and history of certain spots. For instance, why you’ll only notice men sipping tea at certain locations or pointing out a popular women’s hangout. Loved that she took us to the East Gate where she shared some history and enjoyed a seasonal treat (omelet with worms!) I didn't mentally prepare for that one, but it was no biggie as I didn't see them or taste them. We all learned so much (so the history buffs were happy) that went beyond Vietnamese cuisine. Our tour went over by about an hour because we were having so much fun and did some shopping along the way (which Nikkita helped us out with a bit of haggling ????) and at no point did we feel rushed by her. I could tell she was having a good time too. It was so convenient to arrive at a new spot and have her order and pay while we socialized. Overall, we were very happy with the tour and are planning to request a customized kids edition tour in the near future. Fun Fact: Nikkita runs Hidden Hanoi cooking classes out of her home. Check them out too! My son has taken a class with her and absolutely loved it. He also learned how to properly use a sharp knife and clean up his work area. Didn’t go in one ear and out the other! Thanks Nikkita! PRO-TIP#1: If you are moving to Hanoi, do a food tour upon arrival so you can enjoy and discover as much of the local food as you can during your time here. You won’t be disappointed! PRO-TIP#2: Don’t eat everything at the first couple of stops. Eat ½ or ¼ of what you are being offered…and wear comfortable shoes!

Hanoi is much bigger than just the Old Quarter. Even though it’s the center of the capital, rich in history and culture, the Old Quarter is still just a small part of the city. Get on a motorbike, we will take you outside and show you areas that most travelers don’t get to see. It’s a different feeling on our motorbikes, going through some lesser known spots, cultural sites while our local Hanoian tour guides explain all about the history of the thousand-year-old city. Besides, you’ll also have the chance to taste some exquisite street food too!
