Where to Eat in Hanoi: The Best Restaurants and Bars

August 28, 2017 Janean Rudisill

The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

The Gourmet Corner Restaurant

SPECIAL: To celebrate the coming festive season, on 24-25 Dec and 31 Dec - 1 Jan 2017, we are going to serve the Special Set menus only. We shall send you a copy of the set menus by email per reservation request. Please kindly send your request to our official email address on this website. The Gourmet Corner restaurant located on the top floor of Hanoi La Siesta Diamond hotel, which boast the finest view of Hanoi from the 12th floor, overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake, the Red River and the ever-growing skyline of Hanoi. The Gourmet Corner food menu is the combination of Vietnamese and some Western favorites. Our Vietnamese food options mostly are the dishes from the North. In northern Vietnam, a colder climate limits the production and availability of spices. As a result, the foods are often less spicy than those in other regions, especially the middle part of Vietnam. Black pepper is used in place of chili as the most popular ingredient to produce spicy flavors. Also, coriander is used commonly in most dishes. In general, northern Vietnamese cuisine is not bold in any particular taste - sweet, salty, spicy, bitter, or sour. Most northern Vietnamese foods feature light and balanced flavors that result from subtle combinations of many different flavoring ingredients. PS: Please be informed that your reservation request by email will be answered within 24 working hours or later depend on our work-load at that moment. Any urgent booking request should be made through the phone call. We are sorry for any inconvenience may cause.

During our week's stay in Hanoi, we visited the Gourmet Corner twice and on both occasions, we had a gastronomic delight!
Firstly, the view was fabulous - overlooking Hanoi from high above.
Next, the welcome and service from all staff was excellent, but in particular, from the young manager, who was warm and gave us fabulous information on the dishes we'd chosen.
Finally, the food! Wonderful! Delicious! Cooked to perfection ! It all exceeded our expectations.
A gourmet delight - do go there and see for yourself !

We purchased the buffet breakfast as part of our 4 nights' stay at the JW Marriott.
We were impressed by the range of dishes served. Service was also very personal - they had servers going round the tables recommending dishes even though it was a buffet, and not only that - they even bring the recommended dishes right to the table for us!
Our son was unable to join us on the second morning as he was not well and the Cafe was so kind as to arrange for a takeaway portion to be packed for him. And when they missed him again on the last morning, they actually inquired about his well being and asked whether we needed a takeaway pack. Just how good can the service get in this place?? We were all so WOWED!
This Cafe made quite a difference to our stay at the JW Marriott - keep it up guys!!

We went here during a family trip, and were pleasantly surprised by the top-notch service and delicious food! We had 'Tip Top' as our waiter, and he was phenomenal. From the very beginning he had us laughing and having a great time, and he made superb recommendations on the food front. Seriously - just let him order for you if he is your waiter! Definitely recommend getting the 'buffet' menu, which is really an all-you-can-eat menu (you stay at your table). It was great for us because we could try more things, and its a good deal. You won't be sorry if you go here!

After checking TA rankings, we thought we'd give this "famous" place a try.
FOOD (1.095M dongs / 34 GBP / 30 EUR for 3 with drinks)
We had starters, mains and cocktails and everything was exquisite in my opinion. The food wasn't just delicious, it was presented in style like it would in a big chef restaurant in Europe or a Michelin Star restaurant. We were very very impressed by this restaurant and if I am not mistaken the chef of this restaurant has won Top Chef contest in Vietnam. A must try if you are not on a backpacker budget as frankly for Westerners, this remains very cheap.
STAFF/SERVICE
Very professional staff and service; rightfully in line with the image of the restaurant.
ATMOSPHERE/LOCATION
I believe there are two of these restaurants but this particular one was just next door to our hostel which was very convenient. There are many hostels in this street. The location is a 5-10min walk from the night life street, 4min from the Lake.
The atmosphere is kind of romantic, slightly dark, I'd recommend dinner only there. The tables are also on 2 (maybe even 3 floors) so might be more complicated if you cannot go up some stairs. The toilets are also upstairs. In the background they have screens playing Top Chef Vietnam which is rather entertaining (perhaps less professional)
CONCLUSION: I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AND WOULD RETURN ANYDAY.
