Addo Elephant National Park was proclaimed in 1931 to provide a safe haven for the few wild elephants that survived the early 20th century. Today the elephants number in their hundreds, thanks to the efforts of the National Parks Board and a unique vegetation type - subtropical thicket, or valley bushveld. It is this thick, impenetrable vegetation that has not only provided protection for the elephants and buffalo in the area, but also provided a rich food source, supporting what is now the most dense population of wild elephants on the planet. Our game drive concentrates on finding and viewing elephants. Buffalo, Rhino and Lion sightings of the latter are a definite bonus, while you may also be lucky enough to see dung beetles keeping the park tidy!

Inclusions: Private transportation, Light South African Braai (BBQ) in the park to use the toilet facilities and stretch the legs.

Exclusions: Food and drinks, Lunch, Gratuities

Addo Elephant National Park is the third biggest reserve in South Africa at well over 200000 hectares. The animals are in an entirely wild habitat and the Addo Elephants are renowned for being 'Gentle Giants'. They are usually quite calm, allowing for great close-up viewing and excellent photo opportunities. It is the only 'Big 7' Reserve in the World. The Park has incorporated a Marine Protected Area where, on a Marine Safari, you could see the Southern Right Whale (seasonal) & Great White Shark as well as the African Penguin and Bottlenose Dolphins. Combine this with the 'Big 5', Elephant, Lion, Buffalo,Rhino and Leopard at the main park and it is now known as a 'Big 7' Reserve. The Park also boasts 5 of the 7 biomes in South Africa.

Inclusions: Snacks with refreshments, Bottled water, Binoculars, All Fees and Taxes, Hand sanitizer

Debbie took me out me out on two separate Game Drives over two days, one to Addo Elephant Park and the other to a Big 5 Game reserve. Debbie usually runs tours from Port Elizabeth but just picked me up from Addo town. I had a lovely couple of days seeing all sorts of game and even white Rhino. The scenery was stunning in both locations and even getting there with delightful country drives I won't mention where where we saw the white Rhino as they are utterly endangered. I have done a three week extensive safari before and this time I just wanted to to have a couple of days in a private vehicle with a local guide, no stress and just comfort. Excellent Choice!!! Debbie was a delight to have as a guide, not only cause of her knowledge of the Game, the comfortable vehicle, but it was so easy to converse with Debbie also on other subjects and I learned a lot about South Africa. Overall a 5 star experience, I can highly recommend Addo Secret Safaris.

This was an amazing experience: we saw a lot of animals and learned a lot. We were really lucky to see the lion at first and the elephants came up really close. Our guide Steven was great, really helpfull and he could answer all our questions (and we had a lot). The braai was really good and we are foodlovers. Also the vegetarian option was super! Bellevue is a delightful spot with wonderful potential but it was expensive for what we received. The lodge is average yet some of the accommodation has been recently upgraded. The staff were pleasant. The food lacked finese opting for massive plates of food over good quality. Walking with the giraffes was a lovely experience but at the cost of R2600 for the expereince alone (this was for a family of 4) it works out to be very expensive for locals. I really wish the Bellevue team the greatest success and I hope that we see them grow from strength to strength in the future.

10. Big 5 Wildlife Conservation

1 Carlton Rd, Paterson, 6130, South Africa Khaya Volunteer Projects

The Big Five Safari Reserve began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture. Today the reserve consists of six independently-owned lodges. The lodges are owner-managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The Big Five Safari Reserve Volunteer Project is a unique conservation initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely and so making a contribution to the conservation of our natural heritage. The challenge has been to re-establish the original flora and fauna species to the area and to return the land to nature. Gap year students and volunteers can be part of this bigger picture and work and live on this reserve and help with all the aspects of running a safari reserve in Africa.

Inclusions: Accommodation, meals, a cleaning lady and a once-a-week laundry service. , All the training programs you need for your work at the project are also included.
