Things to do in Dresden, Saxony: The Best City Tours

February 8, 2022 Matilde Konrad

On the banks of the lovely Elbe River, the German city of Dresden is lush and green, filled with forests and gardens and parks. The city is rich with cultural and artistic history; the great operatic composer Wilhelm Wagner debuted a number of works here in the 1800s and, today, an independent light opera company keeps the classical art form modern and fresh. Culture vultures will love the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and Grünes Gewölbe museums, and architecture buffs will salivate over the mélange of styles reflected in the cityscape.

I used Thomas Travel and Vadim as my tour guide on a recent trip to Prague. I ended up booking 4 private trips with him around Czech Republic and Eastern Germany. There is so much to see! Cesky Krumlov is a real gem! I really enjoyed Vadim’s personal approach and encyclopaedic knowledge of the history. He also gave me lots of ideas of what little secret places to see in Prague itself. The car was very nice too. If you want to have an experienced and reliable tour guide in that region, look no further.

If you are in Meissen, go for the Stadtkirche (central market place) and ask if you are allowed to climb the tower. Currently, the tower is under renovation so please ask in the Tourist office opposite of the Stadtkirche for the key. You've to pay 2 EUR and then you can climb up the tower. There are several levels to climb: 1st the stone steps, 2nd a wooden stair, then the higher you climb at last a tiny ladder but you'll be awarded with a fantastic look over Meissen. See it yourselves and report……. :-)

You will go through the main sights of AltStadt in 2h. Our guide showed us the main sights of Altstadt. She was British and spoke slowly enough for a group of many different Nationalities to understand. The atmosphere of this tour was highly relaxed and she made us feel welcomed. We really enjoyed learning about History of Dresden and our guide made History alive through little stories that she told (my wife described as “gossip”) and she was highly knowledgeable: when we asked two questions off-piste about the significance of artefacts et the colour of buildings, she told us two more stories! The tour lasted 2h but we did not see the time pass! Highly recommended.
