Things to do in Busan, South Korea: The Best Thermal Spas

May 14, 2022 Giuseppe Pratt

Busan is Korea's second largest city.  Tourists often come to this region to hike and to visit the Buddhist Temples located deep within the region's mountains. The Beomeosa Temple, founded in 678 AD, is perhaps one of the most frequented temples in the area and is always packed with worshipers and tourists. For art buffs, Busan offers several museums and historical buildings. If scenery is your thing, try visiting the Dongbaek Island, or bird watch at the Nakdong river estuary.

Hurshimchung Spa

Reviewed By spinalcrackerbox - Kampot, Cambodia

I love getting myself in hot water & naked with other strangers of the same gender and have been too many onsen's, hot springs, sauna's & spa's in Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan & the US. I can only speak of the male section but Hurshimchung wins my first place for a large facility. The number of pools and offered different temperatures is amazing. The water is mineral rich and not just warm salt water as in nearby Centum City Spaland (a student I asked was right, Hurshimchung is better). The entry fee is reasonable and there is no time limit (unlike Spaland). On my first visit I spent seven hours here. Lounging under that huge dome is great. Do stay until it gets dark, when the huge pillars get illuminated & change colors. The place never felt crowded due to its size even when I visited again on a weekend day. While not my fave water on the planet, that award goes to the hot spring in Tecopa, CA, I'd go back to Hurshimchung in a heartbeat.

Haeundae Spa Center

Reviewed By limtravelz

Was super tired from my 6.5 hour flight plus the train to busan so decided to go to a korean spa. Googled what was closest to my hotel and BAM the Haeundae Spa Center was within 2 min walking distance. WHY NOT? So me and the friend I was travelling with decided to go for it since we thought a nice scrub and massage would be good. Firstly, as many a review as stated - barely any english communication is available. We had a hard time figuring out how to even get to reception but eventually made it to the 4th floor. With some gesturing motions, we both paid for a scrub and massage and off we went. We were semi escorted to the lockers and then got completely naked to shower before enjoying the hot pools of water. Pro tip : bring the hotel/your own Shampoo and Shower stuff so you can shower after, we didnt bring anything so we only had their bar of soap and had to go back to the hotel after to shower. I am still completely unsure as to how the lining up process begins for the scrub but she gestured for us to come back later. So we hung around the hot pools and colder pools for about 30 mins before reapproaching the scrub area. The scrub area consists of four beds that are covered in plastic so when water is splashed on it, it slides right off and your body is ALSO extremely slippery on this wet mat bed. A lovely aunty lady who could be topless or not will start scrubbing you with extreme vigor. If your eyes are open you get to see the vigorous scrub that is going on next to you as well - I guess everyone is completely in the buff so all is good. We paid for a 45 min massage and a scrub - silly me thought after the scrub we would shower and be led to a nice massage table in a different area. NO. The massage commences right after the scrub and it is INTENSE. They use brute force and your face is smushed against the wet plastic bed with no hole (not comfy) firstly, and secondly you have no idea when hot water will be lobbed onto your body tjhis really is a shock to the senses has you have no idea what comes next. I mean she climbed onto the bed and started stepping on me as well (it seems unsafe on a slippery bed) but what do I know - guess there are guard rails in the ceiling for a reason. She uses her hands, fingers, feet, elbows, moves you by pulling your hair, anything goes really when you are in the mercy of scrub aunty and on a wet plastic bed naked. At the end of all of this, you are are instructed to take a shower. I felt lighter, dead skin free and my body felt bruised, battered but AMAZING. This was seriously an experience of a lifetime and I would 100% go again if I had the chance. I wouldnt call it a comfy experience, but a great way to get the knots out of your tired body, have the smoothest skin and soak pools of hot water with other ladies. Trying to figure out what to do with the tiny towel they gave us initially was also an experience, just go with the flow and you'll have a blast!
