The Cotswold Pottery

Reviewed By MikeyG53 - Emersons Green, United Kingdom

A quick review to acknowledge how pleased we were to discover this excellent small enterprise. The location is only a short distance away from the main centre but not on the main tourist thoroughfare to the car parks and the main, well known Bourton-on-the-Water attractions. We stumbled on it and decided to pop in, we hadn’t noticed the sign in the commercial centre, advertising the studio, until after we had visited. What we saw in the studio appealed and one particular design suited out kitchen colours. A garlic pot was the initial choice and then we saw a matching spoon rest and a matching pot for cooking implements. There were many other pots and tea pots too. I have earmarked the salt pot for another purchase when I’m next in the Stow area. We rang the bell (as instructed) to attract the proprietor to make the purchases. The potter himself, John Jelfs, appeared and told us about the clay, which was from the local river, and the attractive glaze design with ochre from the Forest of Dean, and wood-ash from the fire that fires the clay, plus local limestone. John had an unexpected link with us as he lived and was schooled in Bristol; I am a Bristolian, and my partner and I live in Bristol. John and I also shared a link to Filton in Bristol. It was pleasant and interesting to talk to John, and we were very pleased with our purchases. It’s good to buy from an artisan, we rarely buy from tourist-trap shops that line the high streets of most Cotswold towns.
