Things to do in Berlin, Germany: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

June 30, 2021 Russell Mellin

Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

Boxoffberlin

A great, unexpected find in the touristy area surrounding Checkpoint Charlie is boxoffberlin a/k/a bob. It's an amazing mix of an design store, art gallery and espresso bar. The store offers extraordinary souvenirs and cool gifts made by local designers and crafts people, a long way from the mass produced selection in the other shops in the tourist areas of the city. Definitely a place for that unusual Berlin gift. The back space of the shop is a gallery with changing exhibitions of contemporary art, films and more from Berlin based artists. A fascinating place since 2007.

This shop is relatively young compared to several other similar stores in Berlin, but its reputation as a favourite is truly well-deserved. It is an easy walk from the U1 line at Kottbusser Tor or Görlitzer Bahnhof. The selection of techno, electronic, house, disco, jazz + more is smart and varied. The owners definitely are up on their vinyl knowledge. The prices are very reasonable, and there are plenty of used items in the lower bins for surprisingly good prices! They have 3 listening stations, but it's better to come earlier in the day when less people are shopping. It's also a great place for picking up flyers and meeting people in the local scene. I still constantly find gems here and would highly recommend it.

Hacke & Spitze

You need to take the staircase and pass a narrow swinging door. But then you're greeted by probably most lively shop interior in the city. Hacke & Spitze is a large dance shop in the Bergmannkiez. Whether you're a ballet dancer, are in Berlin for a tango workshop or prefer swing-dancing... Here you find the right clothing and appropriate shoes: popular products by large large brands, but also hand crafted individual pieces by small labels. Hacke & Spitze was established in 2010 by Daniela Wasseveld and Jutta Peixoto Cordeiro, two former professional Dancers. The swinging retail design is by the Berlin based Industrial Designer Holger Jahns.

In the family owned business most products are still manufactured by the owners. You find a wide range of ecological cooking oils from regional seeds, cold stirred pesto’s and a broad selection of spices with our own Berliner curry or Kreuzberger Muntermacher, also vegan organic cosmetics. Every Saturday we are pressing local gold flax seed oil. We have nice kitchen utilities and local presents.

I was in the shop with my friend at lunch break and I was just accompanied by her. When we entered the naturally fragrant load, we were very warmly welcomed and recommended by the owner. My friend was offered to taste a piece of brownie that she liked very well. We had a lot of laughing and enjoying our break. I bought vegan chocolate and it tasted amazing! Go for a try!

Skateshop24

This is the head office and warehouse of Skateshop24. Allthough Skateshop24 is a onlineshop, visitors will not be dissapointed. Unlike a fashion store, you will not find a fancy shop with polished shelfes, but industrial racks filled with more skateboarding hardware you have ever seen in one place. You will find no shoes, no beanies or scarfs. But you will find hundreds of skateboards decks, trucks and wheels. And of course there is an experienced skater from our staff ready for you to help finding a perfect board for you. Come have a look! We accept cash & cards
