The once-uninhabited, volcanic archipelago now hosts thousands of tourists every year who flock to the islands for sun, sand and verdant mountain scenery. From the beaches of Praia da Vitoria to the bustling marina of Horta, to the bubbling volcanic ground "ovens" of Furnas, these islands offer unparalleled--and unusual--adventures to discover.

We booked two full day tours with Sabrina ("Full day - Furnas" and "Full day - Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo") and we could not have wished for a better experience! São Miguel is a beautiful island but definitely best visited it with such a passionate, funny and reliable guide. Sabrina was very flexible and we had plenty of time to enjoy the sights, take photos... and pet all the cats! We also enjoyed great food (and some very good wine!) as lunch was included in the tours. Sabrina also took the weather into account when deciding what tours to do and it made a huge difference. We toured the island in a very comfortable small van and while I'm normally car sick, I wasn't this time thanks to Sabrina's smooth driving. Her English is also very good but you'll definitely learn some Portuguese from her along the way. We cannot recommend her enough! Obrigada and bravo Sabrina!

Start the tour on the south coast of the island, stopping at several viewpoints along the way. Visit the Furnas calderas to see a big part of the volcanic activity.
