Warning! Do not stay here! You will fall in love with Saia and his wife Mary, and your heart will break into pieces when you need to leave. Saia and Mary are very generous and hospitable hosts who go above and beyond to make sure you have a lovely stay. Saia took us on a tour of the island, assisted us with many arrangements, and spent many hours chatting away with us. He became a very close friend. Be warned, he will try to tell you he is not related to Morgan Freeman. If you look at the resemblance they really must be twin brothers (though Saia is the handsome one). The lodge itself is very comfortable. Saia and Mary are very sensitive and adaptive to your needs (if you're social- great. If you need you're own space- great). You will find the bill at the end of your stay is very reasonable. From The Maori Princess

Ovava Tree Lodge

Nestled within 'Eua's lush rainforest is the 'Ovava Tree Lodge. Situated directly across from the wharf, a short walk from town and with a Dive Centre on site this is the perfect place to enjoy your 'Eua adventures! Stay in one of our traditional treetop fales complete with a sea view. Each fale is unique in that all the almost all materials are locally grown, prepared in our own sawmill and hand crafted by us. 'Eua is Tonga's oldest and one of the kingdom's least developed islands so if you looking to escape it all, this is your destination! Thanks to 'Eua being a coral island, the beaches may not be sandy but the water visibility is incredible averaging at about 25/30 m on any given day so not booking one of our snorkel or dive trips would be missing out! 'Eua is known for it's Cathedral Cave dive, which is spectacular, but the reefs located all down the West Coast of the island are also stunning. Most are suitable for both snorkeling and diving which is perfect for groups containing non-divers or children! During the most anticipated season, which is of course, Humpback Whale season we offer whale watching/swimming trips where we take small groups to enjoy a magical and once in a lifetime experience. If you can drag yourself out of the salty blue then we have many great hikes on the island for you to explore. Those on a tighter schedule or who like to see a bit of everything in one day we have our fantastic 4WD Island tour where we take you to some of the best and most beautiful spots all round the island. This is highly recommended if you do not have at least 5 days to explore each area of the island and a day of ocean adventures of course! At 'Ovava Tree Lodge a lot of time, effort and love is put in to your meals. Breakfast is complimentary with the room and continental style. A light lunch is offered and is often complimentary if you have arranged a tour/dive trip that day or if you will be joining us for dinner. Dinners are normally Tongan style food, with freshly caught fish being a popular choice. Once a week we light our favourite kitchen appliance, our giant, hand-built, clay pizza oven and have a pizza night where you eat until you cannot fit any more in! At the lodge we bake all our own bread, cake, pizza (obviously), we make our own jams, sauces, coconut milk, coconut butter and coconut flour (which is gluten free). All our fresh produce is purchased from here on 'Eua and when possible everything else too. We believe it is vital to support the local communities. There are no 'supermarkets' but there are several small shops and a small market where you can find most basic goods. There is no pharmacy and only a small hospital so please bring any medication you may need with you. There is a Tongan bank where you can make withdrawals using your card but no ATM. There is also a currency exchange where I believe they give a very decent rate. There is a law in Tonga which states you cannot work on a Sunday. No shops will be open, transport doesn't run and unfortunately we cannot take any boat excursions so no diving etc... so please be aware of this if you plan to stay on a weekend. To get here you can either catch the flight which leaves every morning* around 8 and takes only a mere 7 minutes! But is comparatively expensive. Or you can take the ferry which leaves every day* (apart from a Sunday) between 10/11am and only costs $20/$25 for a single fare. * Both modes of transport are scheduled to leave every day but are weather permitting so when leaving 'Eua it is advised if you have an international flight you leave at least two days prior to hopefully avoid any issues* These are our basic pricelists. If you have any other enquiries or if you have a group booking please contact us directly so we can discuss the best deal for you. Accomodation Single Fale with shared bathroom. $50 Double Fale with shared bathroom. $60 Single Fale with ensuite. $70 Double Fale with ensuite. $80 Bunkhouse bed (diver). $25 Bunkhouse bed (non diver). $30 Family Room (4 persons). $120 *Prices are per night* Meals Lunch $5 Dinner $20 Kids/Vegetarian Option $15 *In Tonga we can be quite limited when trying to cater for certain allergies and dietary requirements so please advise us of any when you book so we can try accommodate your needs* Excursions 4WD Island Tour $80 pp Guided Hike $80 pp Whale Watching/Swimming $200 pp Snorkelling $80 pp Cave Dive - 2 Tanks $300 pp Reef Dive - 2 Tanks $180 pp Discovery Dive $230 pp *All prices are per person and there must be a minimum of 2 people for each trip* *The Cave Dive can only be booked if you have your Open Water certificate and a safety dive must be completed a day prior to the cave dive at a surplus charge* We do accept Visa and Mastercard (5% surcharge).

Good accommodation, but...

Pros: Nice accommodation, near to wharf, we could user paid trips around the island, basic breakfast available (toast bread, butter, marmalade (in case they do not run out of it :), tea) Cons: Terrible communication through email. Once you need to book the accommodation you get reply within hours. If you ask for the deposit payment confirmation you can wait up to 3 weeks no matter how many emails you send. I was not the only one with this experience... It was promised that divemaster is available. When we came to the accommodation it was told us that divemaster is not available. There were 8 of us... We were supposed to have a better price for breakfast and dinner. When we were paying it was told us that what promised DPD on the main island does not count for them. Sometimes really noisy when the ferry is leaving at 5 A.M.

The owner and his beautiful manager couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Taiana's Resort

The owner tried to kill his wife

Reviewed By Q9391SBnicolen

I visited outside whale season, I was their first guest in 2 months! I noticed after arriving, that Kalaffi (the owner) was being hostile towards his wife, I asked the American guy Leftie about the old couple but he said he hadn’t noticed anything. The other resorts were closed I turned out to be the only traveler on the island. On my second night I wake up hearing terrible screams, I run outside with my torch and when I find them Taiana has gone quiet because her husband is sitting on her neck and chest with his knees and full body weight choking her with his one hand! I have never in my life witnessed something so awful. I managed to scare him off her and while trying to get her away from him he comes back so aggressively his anger is now aimed at me, yelling he’s gonna get me for stepping between him and his wife! He was rabid! I ran to get help from Leftie (the American) but he was of no help, what a coward! Absolutely crazy, Kalaffi chased me back to my hut where I sat with adrenaline pumping the rest of the night listening after more screams, but I didn’t hear any. In the morning Leftie came running telling me to call the police to come pick us up since Kalaffi still was in a bad state and he was scared of what he could do to me. Turns out the only one on the island with a working cellphone to call for a boat was the one armed man with the machete. He did call a boat though when I asked him (and I kept a safe distance, he was very aggressive still). I was so happy that the wife, Taiana, joined for the ride back to Lifuka island, she said she was done and was getting a divorce but I sensed she has been beaten for many years, I talked to her daughter about it but the family just shrugged their shoulders and said he’s old. I offered to go to the police with her but she declined. Stay away from this maniac, it’s not a safe place to visit, definitely one of the scariest experiences of my life!

Good but not jezami good.

Reviewed By Darren p

We stayed here for our final night in Tonga, on our arrival we stayed at Jezami hotel. We had ensuite rooms in both places and paid slighlty less for jezami via Expedia. Both places were clean, both served a good breakfast, maybe better at Jezami as it was buffet style. Same options but more of it! The room was bigger at Jezami and there was a TV in the room. Both had limited free wifi, wifi was better at Malau. Malau had tea/coffee in a communal kitchen with small balcony, Jezami had it in the room with a larger private balcony. Both places are very well located for central town and the wharf, short walks. Malau let us down on departure, we booked a private car for $40 pa'anga but were then made to wait an additional 30 minutes at the lodge for someone else to join us. That's ok except we were both charged full price. Not on, poor form. Goven a choice we will book Jezami next time but would'nt ruly out Malau if was was 10-20 dollars cheaper.

Quiet hotel right behind the palace

Reviewed By Greg B

I stayed here for a week (on business) but it was a good base, the room was large although I would have preferred to be upstairs because then I wouldn't have heard people walking above me. Wifi is excellent in and out of your room. This is a quaint little lodge with only a few guests at a time directly behind the Palace (I mean it is literally across the street) and in easy walking distance to the esplanade and markets or if you don't want to walk a taxi is only 2-4 dollars depending on how far you go into town. I suggest walking in and getting a taxi back if you buy a lot. A set breakfast is included: cereal, fruit tea/coffee, toast and they make pretty good scrambled eggs. I never got to eat here because I was functions during the day and night but they catered for that function and the food they put on was amazing. If the food in the restaurant is as good you're on a winner. I had a TV but never used it so can't comment on reception/quality. The A/C works well although you may not need it if you stay during May-August (winter). At night you know you are safe in your room as they shut the and lock the gates after dark and have a security guard on watch all night... but don't worry if you stay out late they let you in :) The staff are very friendly and super helpful, the manager saw me walking one day and pulled over to give me a lift. I only gave the place an average rating because I want other guests not to come here expecting a topend lodge, for the price you pay this place is pretty good. Honestly it is a bit well used and could do with some newer furniture/beds/furnishings, while not new you always get clean fresh sheets and towels. The pressure in the showers is good but it is a circus act to get the temperature right before the hot runs out. It was either skin blistering to cold, I usually opted for a cold shower and used the hot water for shaving. It is the tropics after all and who needs a hot shower, even "cold water" is around 20C. Which reminds me, Tonga does get cooler in the evenings in "winter" you might need a jacket, during the day shorts and t-shirts are fine as it is over 24C if your from less sun clims bring a hat/umbrella and sunsceen because fair skin will burn here but after dark it can drop into the mid teens.
