Hafu's House Backpackers' Hostel

Excellent choice!

Reviewed By andbape

Staying at hafu's house turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip in Tonga. Is a small and cozy backpacker's, well situated, with a nice yard to chill and breakfast included. The owners are lovely (Will has been one of the best hosts so far), the way they make you feel welcomed so quickly is just amazing and unique! Always willing to help out, show you around the island and give heaps of tongan tips. If you go to Tongatapu and have the chance to stay at this picturesque place, we definetly recommend not to miss it out!

Fantastic

Absolutely gorgeous fales on a private island. Simple but sweet and the perfect getaway. Unlike other places no roosters to keep you up all night. Be prepared for no electricity or drinking water. We had some problems with our flights with realtonga and Beth the owner was so great helping us, even allowing us to stay at her private house on the mainland to make sure we made the replacement ferry. We couldn't have managed without her and could have been stuck on Vava'u for another two weeks. Highly recommend staying here for a different island experience. Perfect for young couples.

We have rooms with 2, 3 and double beds. Additional bed on request. Airport transfer T$ 10.00 p.p. Lifts to and from town anytime T$ 1.00. We are the only guesthouse with Kava nights. We offer a tour around Tongatapu for T$ 30.

Toni's Tours (NOT the guest house, didn't stay there)

Toni's Tours may have had a good write up in Lonely Planet but we found him disorganised, unpleasant to his wife who did the driving (why does she put up with him?), somewhat condescending to the locals and well past his prime. The one star rating is for his knowledge of the history and culture of Tongatapu. In hindsight I wish I'd hired a car. I'm writing this here as Toni's Tours doesn't seem to have its own Trip Advisor page, not surprising really.

Peaceful but basic

Reviewed By Aitchisonkc

This is a very basic backpackers, ie no power socket in rooms, must use lanterns at night, no fridge or way to make tea/coffee in your room. It’s difficult to make your own food as it’s basically their home kitchen and there are no shops here so you have to bring it all in. If you are vegetarian you probably won’t be able to eat much as the local food is meat based- taro and sausages/fish etc. Remember to bring your own coffee and tea as they only provide hot water and sugar and milk powder. Bring towels too. (Pretend you are camping lol). The feast on Sunday is great so highly recommend that. This is ideal if you want to feel like you are on a island lost in time and want to get away from technology and the real world and do nothing. The other side of the island has a cool walk around at low tide.

We read previous reviews that this place is really clean and we weren't disappointed. The breakfast is great and you feel like you are really at home. Also it has a nice view of the harbour and the balcony is a great place to relax.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

My family and I spend 2 weeks in Tonga at this Villa from the 20th dec 2019 till 3rd Jan 2020, there were 6 of us and we booked the entire Villa for us. From the time I decided to booked, the communications to and fro with Neil was always prompt and very helpful and professional and courteous. When we finally arrived at the airport we were met by the Friendly and very helpful and very Patient Driver Sam. The owner live right next door to the property which make it a lot safer because they keep and eye on the property all the time. We met the lovely Owner Paea and her Son's Neil, Sam, Francis and they all made us feel welcomed. The house itself is a grand house consist of 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms...it was very comfortable and we soon made our self at home for the next 2 weeks. We hired a car for the entire time we were there, 1st of all because it is a bit of a hike from the house to Town, and secondly I don't do walking in humid hot day or night for that matter lolz...Paea and her son's repeatedly said if there was anything that we need they're just next door and we sure did pop over numerous time to seek there help one way or another and they're always there to help no matter what. I can't really comment on the wifi, because we all change our sim to the local sim service and paid $25 TOP for a 7GB data and 1000 minutes and texts for local number's only and it was good for 2 weeks..overall our stay at the Tonga Holiday Villa was Awesome...AAA service for sure and we will definately be back for sure.

The Village Backpacker

Food Exceptional for Vegetarians

Reviewed By Darren p

We didn't stay at the backpackers but we ate everyday at the cafe attached to it. Serving food out of a converted container the menu is small but perfect. We ate Vegetable curry, stir fry, rice chips and samosas everday for a week. For only $8 tops we were served a curry, rice and roti. For $2 we addeed vegetable samosas. A hidden gem we were fed for a week. Thank you so much. Darren and Paula
