April 23, 2023 Esmeralda Fenner

A city trapped in time, Havana captures the imagination like no other. Faded glamour meets careful colonial-era reconstruction with a backdrop of irresistible color. Walk El Malecón, the walkway bordering the ocean; visit Old Havana and the Catedral de San Cristóbal; and listen for salsa music, open-air bazaars and parties that last all night.

Casa Vieja 1840

In the heart of Old Havana

Reviewed By grubi01

The whole hostel is newly renovated. You can watch the photos from the reconstruction process. It is amazing what they accomplished because before it had been a complete ruin. When booking it you must not forget that it is a centre of the old city. If you do not sleep well you will listen to, in the chronological order: - groups of people occupying the curbs and using the WiFi signal (probably the one from the hostel itself) and discussing fiercely the events of the day – up to 12 pm, - drunk tourists returning to their casas – till 3 am, - rooster crowing for the rest of the night (yes there is a rooster taking care of a herd of hens on the balcony opposite the hostel). The breakfast was rather basic Cuban standard: eggs, bread, fruit, pancakes. We missed jam, which we were served everywhere else, a slice of cheese or something similar.

More than disappointed than happy

Reviewed By TomDeBourgogne

You got different feeling in this casa. - first we received a warm and nice welcome - the house is beautiful - the staff is friendly and helpfull - we have been disappointed with the breakfast compare to all the others casa in Cuba - the casa is a little bit noisy (ring bell from the front door pretty often), rooms seperated only with a wooden door - the thing we didn't appreciate is the owner. We had the feeling, all the questions were interested from her. At the end, the questions asked were always to sell a service. If we were not interested, the conversation was over.

A great intro to Cuba; but be wary of location, language and beds

I was a little apprehensive about this place despite the good reviews on Trip Advisor as I made several attempts to get in touch with them before we arrived, all to no avail. I found 3 separate email addresses for them, one via the booking site I used, one via Trip Advisor and one via their own website that I discovered. None of them received a reply , despite using Google translate to convert the simple message into what looked like fairly passable Spanish. I tried calling them, but the phone was answered by a Spanish speaker who spoke no English, which is basically representative of the small team who run the house. All I wanted was some reassurance that a) they were fully operational after hurricane Irma and b) we would have no problems accessing the place when we arrived as we were due to get their quite late on a Sunday evening. Eventually I got my sister in South America to call them and, with her perfect Spanish, she established that they were expecting us and would be ready and waiting. That was all it took to relieve a slight anxiety. Knowing what I do now about Cuba, i guess a lack of response to email is less surprising, but in that case, don't provide email addresses which no one responds to. First top tip then is if you don't speak Spanish, make sure you have a basic phrase book with you at least to help you out. Second is note that as well as the address quoted on the website, as well as the street number you really need to give the taxi driver the two streets that they are in between (in their case between Avenidas 5 and 7). Otherwise, in the dark, they can be driving around for a while looking - we had to give the driver the phone number to call them and ask for directions. Once there we found we had a lovely spacious room with lovely looking semi-antique furniture and a similarly spacious, and to some extent antique, bathroom. The one downside to this was that the beautiful looking bed was fairly uncomfortable. The Villa appears to be run by an older lady and two younger women (her daughters perhaps?) who live-in and are always available to help if they can. Their lack of English was the one barrier to this for us, but by and large we got around this with the use of very basic Spanish and a phrasebook and they were only too happy to help arrange a taxi into the centre of Havana for us for example. The location is another one to be wary of. We liked it's location in the quiet and relatively smart Embassy district, but it is quite a way from central and Old Havana. They will arrange a taxi for you which we found to be very reasonable (we never got a cheaper ride in either direction...although he did very nearly break down once), but if you want to have those things on your doorstep, then this is not the place for you. I would also recommend looking up things like restaurants in the area before you go or take a copy of Lonely Planet with you...there are plenty around there, but searching for a decent one in the dark can be a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack without advanced preparation. Breakfast was basic and simple, but very acceptable and included in our B&B rate and served for us in the quiet back garden every morning. They will also sell you bottled water and beers at very fair prices and lent us a corkscrew one evening once we managed to explain what we were after. Lovely people, very safe, friendly environment and, as long as you don't want to be at the heart of things, a very pleasant location.

A TRINIDAD haven

Reviewed By Katherine F

This hostel is in Trinidad - not Havana - it is 5 hours drive from Havana on the south coast of Cuba. Trinidad was the highlight of our trip to Cuba and this was a perfect place to stay. The family were very friendly and communicative despite our embarrassing lack of Spanish, that didn’t deter Madame Magaly! The breakfasts were superb, including mango and avocado from their own back garden. 4 of us had the whole of the first floor and the roof terrace to ourselves and a little front balcony where we could watch the fascinating Trinidadian world go by.
