Take your time

Welcome to a very neat, comfortable and well appointed guesthouse. We stayed in the upper terrace room, which proved great for sitting out and enjoying the view across the river (complete with wild Orangutan on one occasion, so bring binoculars). Our hosts organised airport pickup and local activities without a hitch. Excellent food is available close by. We loved it and spent an extra night to make 6 nights in all.

Good ambience good food

Food is the most satisfying things in this place. The room was big enough for more extra bed, the staff is helpful, the minus things is the river in not right in front of the inn.. but a little bit further.

Undiscovered hideaway

Reviewed By Maineexplorer

This hotel reminds me of Bali 30 years ago- charming in its rusticity, relatively undiscovered, quirky and isolated. The long-tail macaques put on a show daily on our balcony and we were thrilled to get “up close and personal” with multiple elephants that appeared to be well-treated at a park that was a tailbone-busting 4-wheel 2-hours-of bumps ride away. Had I ever really lived before I was joyfully head-bumped by a frisky juvenile elephant or looked eye to eye with a reclining matriarch while I bathed her face? Nope! Our room was simplistic but with a great river view and a carved 4-poster bed with the requisite netting. In need of some “spit and polish”, it was none the less private and had a unique outdoor bathroom with a truly one-of-a-kind rock and tile shower. Ever shower with 5 monkeys peering down on you from the roof? We did! The restaurant staff was very helpful and efficient in an island-y sort of fashion. Food choices were limited but quite good and we enjoyed chatting up the chef who had travelled/lived in the US. We were told ice cream “maybe tomorrow” each day to no avail. But what can you honestly expect from an isolated guesthouse with no road- only a rugged pathway for pedestrians and ubiquitous gnat-like scooters that was easily a 20-minute walk from the main drag? And there-in lies the charm! Keep expectations real- this is not a place for US hotel-chain fans or lovers of luxury. We were the only Americans in town it seemed and felt we had discovered a funky paradise.

Home near the Jungle

A good place to get away from people, or, on the contrary, to get to know them closer. Both introversial me and my socially active, nice and extraversial friend liked the place a lot. People living there are very nice. Accommodation neat and comfortable, and every sunrise and when the night comes you can see the whole small world beneath you and hear the music of Jungle. As Claude Levi-Strauss wrote: Music is a language by whose means messages are elaborated, that such messages can be understood by the many but sent out only by few, and that it alone among all the languages unites the contradictory character of being at once intelligible and untranslatable - these facts make the creator of music a being like the gods.

Ida Guest House & Restaurant

Very accommodating host with excellent jungle trekking.

Reviewed By Alex K

We enjoyed our stay at the Ida Guest house. We had a basic room (mosquito net, bed, bathroom, toilet etc) and had a comfortable 3 nights here (1 night in the jungle). The room is basic with no hot water, but you are in quite a remote area. WiFi was great throughout. We booked a tour to the jungle overnight through the guest house. This is a must! The guides were brilliant and it was great to see all the wildlife. We had only 4 in our group and really enjoyed staying in the jungle. Mudhi was very helpful throughout and provided vegan food at his restaurant when we were hungry. It was all reasonably priced. He also looked after our bikes. Lovely shared seating area outside and it is in an excellent location. Things to note, there are no cash machines and he charged me 3% on a card payment. Also we arrived when it was dark on bikes, the local people were rather intimidating and persistent. They followed us aggressively on bikes even when we told them we were fine and had a hotel.

Great location and friendly staff

You get a warm welcome from Amal when you arrive and he really wants you to experience the best of Bukit Lawang. He’s able to help organise treks and transport for you. The rooms are spacious with mosquito nets and a towel provided. You can also fill up your water bottles there for 4000 rupiah per refill. You’re a 1 minute walk from the river where you can go for a dip when it gets too hot! Food was okay but recommend eating elsewhere as there are really delicious places just down the road.

Fun Family Guest House

Great stay and great tours!

Reviewed By thejeanelise

Putts and his family were excellent hosts and I really enjoyed his trekking tour of the Sumatran jungle. He is very thoughtful of the animals and, unlike many other tour guides, he does not feed the animals or try to tame them so tourists can get their selfies. I chose him because I had read he was conscientious, and I was right! He was very informative, educational, and protective of the animals and their habitat. Also, his cook prepared some of the best food I had in Sumatra - his coconut chicken was amazing! A plead to other tourists, please please please, do NOT feed the animals in the jungle - it’s very harmful to them. Also please keep a respectful distance, it’s dangerous to desensitize animals to human presence and also creates unnecessary stress. No selfish selfies! :) they have enough working against them with habitat loss. Thank you! Enjoy tour stay with Putra - ask him to share his riddles with you!! He’s got lots of good puzzles :)

Camping in the jungle

Reviewed By Omahhung

I stayed with my two daughters - 10 and 14 years old at the lodge for 5 nights and we absolutely loved it. Uddin has been a perfect host and made us feel totally save and comfortable.its thee place to choose if you like to get away from the crowds and like to be as close to nature as possible. But keep in mind that you have to walk a good 45 minutes from the hub of town and the last part quite steep up. Breakfast and dinner we had at the lodge as it's not advisable to walk up in the dark - mostly simple clean traditional Indonesian style food made by Uddins wife at their home. We also went trekking with him and managed to see a few orang utans and other wildlife. The jungle is truly amazing, but I find the prices unproportionate ( although nearly same everywhere I believe) we for sure would come again and stay with Uddin at the lovely jungle lodge
