We came there and wanted to order pancakes, coffee and lemonade. Coffee wasn't great, lemonade was just a tap water with sirup. We waited 40 minutes but no pancakes were delivered. So we've decided to cancel order and leave but waiter let us wait for another 10 minutes and he did not even say sorry...

How disappointing

Reviewed By ccfc181

We booked this ‘4’ star hotel for two nights to round off a nice week away in the Tatra mountains. We thought we would go half board and just enjoy the surroundings including the lake. We arrived a little early but couldn’t check in until spot on 14:00, okay no problem, as we arrived at 14:10, just to make sure the receptionist seen us coming but still elected to go for a smoke and left us waiting until she was ready to serve us. She was grumpy and certainly not happy in her work, not a great start. The room was fine and the bed comfy so no complaints there. We went out and on arrival back we went to dinner, we were hopeful of something nice within the four course meal. The explained that we were half board and the waitress just pointed to page of Slovak food, having lived in Slovakia for three years we weren’t interested in these dishes, but she clearly wasn’t interested in helping us. So we went to reception where we are told that no you have to have the half board menu. Okay no problem, we take a look and its a set menu, zero choice, cabbage soup, do not like, duck starter no thank you, pigs neck and cabbage main, erm really no thank you and jelly with sponge pudding, I’m 55 not 5. So we asked if there was anything else we could do, answer no you weren’t here this morning so you have no choice, well i sort of was but you refused check in? We left and went to eat else where, there are some great places around. When we woke the next morning we searched high and low for the kettle and tea and coffee, as advertised with half board, nowhere to be found. We went to reception, mmmmmmm okay heres a new kettle and go and get cups and tea from the restaurant, any coffee? No we don’t do that! Breakfast was excellent, no complaints at all, on arival the waiter handed us a menu for the evening meal. Interesting as usual cabbage soup, once again duck starter. Now a choice of three for the main, salmon, elergic to fish, pasta with broccoli, not very exciting but edible and turkey breast filled with goats cheese, okay something there to eat, pudding pana cotta, not something we like. So I guess we could at least have a main and nothing else. We opted to book a nice meal in a different hotel rather than be disappointed once again. So our half board experience ended up being a bed and breakfast experience. It’s a great location, but the hotel seriously lets itself down by its service and staff with a poor attitude to service and guests. This is a Slovak 4 star hotel, so if your from any other country you should rate it as a 2 star, certainly not unusual in Slovakia. No bottled toiletries, big bottles on the wall and just shower gel, no separate shampoo. Would we stay again, most certainly not.

Number one choice in the region

Inconspicuous oasis of relaxation in High Tatras. Offering great rooms, food, wellness and personnel. Fifteen-minute walk from Strbske pleso. We come back to this hotel almost every year since 2012, choosing it for both our summer and winter vacation in Tatra Mountains. Having experienced staying at Kempinski and Patria on multiple occasions, I still prefer Borovica despite a couple of shortcomings. The most obvious one is its distance from Strbske pleso, which is not that much of a problem during the day, but since taking a walk around the lake in the late evening, with lamps lit up, is so beautiful, you are making a compromise. Once you had your delicious dinner at Borovica, you would probably think twice about dragging your full belly up the road for that hint of romantic. Especially if you have little children. There are rooms at Borovica from which you get a very nice view at the mountains, but if you are accommodated on the other side of the hotel, you have to make do with pine trees at best. In this respect, both Kempinski and Patria do have the upper hand. As they do in offering parking space in a garage, extra paid but very handy in winter time. Being slightly hidden, Borovica’s location scores in calmness. The hotel is considerably smaller than its counterparts at Strbske pleso, which also means it is cosier in almost every aspect. Rooms are quite nice and very well equipped. Bathrooms offer ample space and quality cosmetics. Being a four-star hotel, it is not fair to compare it with the Grand Hotel Kempinski, but personally I hardly sense any difference in comfort between the two, notwithstanding Kempinski’s superior location. I am convinced that you will be very satisfied with the dinner service, the menu always offers three choices and I can’t remember a time I would have any complaint about a meal. In the summer, you get to enjoy some courses prepared on a charcoal grill. During the day, the a la carte menu is absolutely perfect, though we rather tend to grab something for lunch on the hikes or in the chalet at Strbske pleso. As for breakfast, the buffet selection helps with a pleasant start for the day. The restaurant and other hotel staff have always been very kind and professional, which can’t/couldn’t be said about every other hotel mentioned here, unfortunately. You can also indulge in tobacco and brandy savouring in the splendid cigar lounge designed in the typical English style. In winter, a wood crackling in the fireplace enhances the atmosphere. The lobby bar offers a great selection of drinks as well, and a few years ago it was extended to the exterior in the form of a couple of tables, which is highly convenient. The wellness is a strong asset. The pool area offers a beautiful view of the neighbouring pine woods, and I just love to have a swim and then read the magazines while resting on a lounge chair and soaking up the beauty of the surrounding nature. The selection of saunas is excellent, complemented by a hammam. You can also have a jacuzzi on the rooftop prepared for you and observe the mountain peaks from within, regardless of year season. I particularly like the fact that there are rarely more than just a couple of hotel guests in the wellness at the same time. Very often you may have the entire wellness area for yourself, if you choose time outside of typical peak hours. The hotel also offers a variety of spa and cosmetic procedures, so you know where to look for your better-half when she is not around. We have had a pleasure of meeting many remarkable therapists over the years here, very skilful and incredibly kind. The spa rooms are very nice too. My favourite is the cigar lounge. If the weather does not allow for any activity outside, the fitness studio offers you a possibility to toil yourself in every position imaginable. The equipment is of high quality and the room has an outside view, and it is just a few steps away from the showers and the pool. There is even an artificial climbing wall of considerable height on the hotel’s south facade ready for you, and the hotel provides an experienced instructor for supervision. During the ski season, you can rely on hotel's excellent shuttle service driving you to and from the ski areal. The shortcoming considering the distance of Strbske pleso is probably the only true weak point of this hotel. Although I know it is only my own laziness that prohibits me from taking those wonderful summer evening walks around the lake after dinner. But let’s not put that on the record. Otherwise I am having a hard time to think of something else. Hmm, yes, the wording on the lift’s wall designating the amenities on each particular floor could get a renovation, since some letters were missing. And hopefully some day soon there will be digital bracelet keys introduced, so that you do not have to think of a key card when going to the wellness. This summer (2020) we were not able to get a room at Borovica, since we decided for a trip to Tatras at the last minute and all had already been booked out. Staying at another hotel, in a very nice suite with a magnificent lake view, we only got reassured that Borovica stays our first choice in the region.

Amazing hotel, great food!

Reviewed By martinsC1104MU

Firstly, I would like to say that the whole hotel is really lovely place, where you can spend your summer and winter holidays. Hotel is partly renovated, and the rooms are nice and clean. + The food in hotel is the best food I have ever eaten in my life. It has the best location, because it is almost on the slope and you can also do some hiking around the hotel in the summer. It has also own parking plot with a lot of free space, even in the evening. Great plus is also its own newly build wellness with whirlpool and 3 saunas. In front of the hotel is small square, where you can buy some food or souvenirs and cross-country stadium where you can try cross-country skiing. - As always, there are some things I did not like, for instance: in the shower you had to wait longer for hot water, it makes showering not really comfortable because either you wait for hot water or you are showering in cold water. Moreover, one member of their stuff was kind a rude while talking with me, but maybe he had just bad day :), other stuff was really nice and polite. To sum everything up, whole experience in hotel Fis was incredible! Even though there were some small minuses the accommodation facility as a whole was amazing and as a regular customer I will come back as soon as possible. Thank you very much. (Additionally, I would like to pointed out that this hotel has really big potential in the future, because in the past it served as a training facility for people doing sports professionally, therefore behind the hotel they have big sport infrastructure with pool, gym, table tennis and so on. I hope in the near future it will be renovated and put into operation. We are all keeping our fingers crossed for you.)

A great family run place

Reviewed By harrrypot

Pension Please is located right off the road leading into the town and has parking on premise. Though just outside the centre of town, there is an easy and beautiful walking path to the town. Its a family run place and couldn't be more charming and lovely. The check in was handled well and we were cozily ensconced in our rooms in short time. The rooms are simple, sparkling clean and very comfortable. There is a small balcony from which terrific views of the mountains are available if the fog didn't cloud most of our visit!!! Beds are super comfortable and the bathroom is convenient with enough space - one doesn't knock over things in a bid to shower! They provide a hair and body wash which smelled delightful and kept the bathroom smelling good. Enough storage - shelf wise if you are staying a few days, which we did. The rooms also have a TV and wifi was excellent. There is a nice lounge/ sitting area outside the rooms where you can sit and read. As with many places in Slovakia, there place is super child friendly, which as good as it might get noisy if the children played outside the rooms and you want to sleep! The restaurant/ dining area primarily is for breakfast. They do not provide other meals but do provide delicious deserts/ pastry with a variety of hot drinks when you want it (at extra charge). They also have a good bar that you can choose to hang out at. The dining area also has a nice sitting area with a terrific view when not foggy (we were plagued with the fog through most of 3 days unfortunately). The breakfast is excellent and the scrambled eggs are to die for. Mother and daughter hold the flag flying high and the food served is just fantastic. Overall, we had a great stay here and would highly recommend it. It was unfortunate that we could not do much hiking , the primary purpose of our trip, due to very heavy fog and rain. But given pension please was so good, we didn't mind the relaxation and rest. There is a jacuzzi/ spa that one of our group used and highly recommended it. The family members are friendly and their dog Alex added to the warmth of the place.

Great location, Make sure you know who your host is! Locked Fire Exits!!!!!!

Reviewed By grahambU6649CY

Was not explained to us at any point during arrival that we were not guests of the hotel. Because of this the reception staff were particularly inattentive to our needs on arrival and it was only on day 3 that they told us that we were not guests of the hotel because we asked why our room was not being serviced. we were told that only one service had been included in the price, and to contact the owner if we were unhappy. This was the first we were aware that we were not dealing with the actual hotel..... One room service before we arrive and no other for 4 days really isn't acceptable for what is marketed as a 4* hotel. Also - A signed fire exit was padlocked shut which I believe is illegal. When we pointed this out to the hotel staff we were told the local fire chief had done this - I find this difficult to believe.... Finally, we stayed for 4 nights with an infant child, which means we had a pram and pushchair. The lifts were bizarre and meant that even when you got to your floor, you still had a flight of stairs to go up or down - impossible with a pushchair. This could be avoided by taking a seperate service type elevator and pushing the pram through the middle of the restaurant. Not a great experience during busy meal times. Parking was not included in the price. I suspect because the owner does not have private parking. However, when we paid for parking the hotel did not make it clear that there were in fact 3 tiers of parking. 1-Private indoor apartment parking, 2-Hotel private parking indoor, 3- Hotel private parking outdoor. As we had company for the first 2 nights with a friend staying in a private apartment which came with parking indoors, we were able to use her space. When she left and we paid for 2 additional nights private parking for our 'private apartment' the hotel would only supply us with access to their outside parking at 9 Euros per night. This caused us confusion as they didn't explain the different types of parking.
