The best available hotels & places to stay near San Cristobal de las Casas

August 5, 2022 Terina Blouin

A stronghold of Mayan culture, San Cristóbal’s colonial stucco walls and Spanish tile roofs contrast with the surrounding villages, which remain home to an array of Mayan-descendant Indians. The city itself is a delight. Paired with the cultural diversity surrounding it, there’s nothing like it in Mexico.

Excellent Hotel

This boutique hotel is exceptional. I stayed 10 nights. It is decorated with authentic arts and crafts and tapestries from the region. Everything is clean and comfortable and well maintained. Shower and bathroom worked perfectly. It is located on a nice quiet street but is still near the central square. The staff is professional, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and available 24/7. The restaurant has good food in a charming courtyard and they will make sandwiches for your day-trips on request. A big thanks to all the staff for creating such a great place and making me feel at home while exploring all the wonders of the great state of Chiapas.

Well maintained colonial style hotel

Reviewed By Nick I

The main square around the courtyard is beautiful. Well maintained with lots of potted plants and greenery. We stayed in the bridal suite, which was spacious and clean. And resonant priced! Just a block away from the cathedral and plaza. The staff was very helpful. We didn’t stay in the newer, three story section. So I can’t speak for that one. But the older hacienda style square is breathtaking. The food/buffet was decent. There are better places to eat nearby. Also, they have a man selling jewelry at the front desk/lobby area. He gave us weird vibes. Every time we left, he made a comment like “you’re heading out again?! You’re gonna be out all day?” And it just felt creepy that he stands there all day and he knows who comes and goes. Also, there are two sections to this hotel, across the street from one another. We stayed in the section across from the telas modernas store. This section is more beautiful than the other one.

Hotel Casa Mexicana

The Hotel Casa Mexicana is located in the beautiful mountainous and colonial city of San Cristóbal. It is centrally located within walking distance of many historical sites. We offer you all the amenities, comforts and personal services of a fine hotel, relax in the interior sky-lit garden, enjoying the original mexican art treasures assambled here. The guest rooms all open into the gardens or private courtyards. We built the Hotel Casa Mexicana with the idea of offering our guests a little bit more than just a hotel, our goal was to create a space filled with art, folk - art and the presence of nature, which would be very Mexican. We invited our artist friends, who had been to San Cristobal beforehand, to create artistic pieces which speak about it. And we searched in all Mexico for the very special and beautiful pieces of folk - art which we display here, too. We are very satisfied with what we have realized so far and everyday we put out all our energy to still become better and have you feel relaxed here and enjoying the hotel.

9 nights in San Cristobal

Reviewed By Travelling_Pandas80

Casa Mexicana is a great hotel to visit San Cristobal. Miguel and Elton at the reception, Sonia and Rey in the restaurant, and Francisco and Mateo the bellboys, were more than helpful and accommodating. The breakfast buffet is really good, and with the additional guacamole we ordered it turned into a feast. The fountain in the central courtyard gives a lovely and relaxing sound, and the armchairs placed in that area are perfect for sitting down and catching your breath after walking around San Cristobal. Our only complaint was the noise made by the water pump, but once we mentioned it to Miguel, he helped us switching us to a quieter room. He also helped us booking some tours (Palenque and Cañon del Sumidero).

Conveniently located next to the Zocalo

Reviewed By Rits2211

This boutique hotel is elegant, has friendly and dedicated staff working there. The room is perfectly decorated with high ceiling if you’re on the first floor. The towels are plush, the robes are quality made and even the slippers are worthy to take home one of a kind. The shower lacks pressured water flow, our only complaint but still doable. The hotel is conveniently located next to the center zocalo. We bought a bottle of wine and drank at the lounge next to the front desk and hung out for hours. It’s so worth it to stay here and we felt like two nights were not enough.

Perfect boutique hotel with panoramic views of San Cristobal

Reviewed By cavedodger

So happy to have found this lovely hotel. From the moment we stepped off the ground transportation we were made to feel welcome, like coming home. There are so many wonderfully well thought out details that I am sure I will forget to mention many of them. As the name suggests, this is very much a vertical layout with the rooms set either side of a long stair leading ever higher up the side of the hill – and far from being a problem, this is the features that ensures that every single room has spectacular views of picturesque San Cristobal de las Casas. And after sampling so much delicious local cuisine, we were glad for the exercise involved in reaching our incredibly spacious rooms. We stayed in #11 but had friends in other rooms including #7. The entrance to #11 is via the living room featuring a large sofa (with pullout if required), a fireplace (sadly not in use due to air-quality rules) and an enchanting little balcony, an ideal spot for a morning coffee or evening glass of wine or mezcal… Up from there you find a smaller full shower-room and then through another door to the master-suite, featuring a huge comfortable king-size bed in a wood floored bedroom as well as a very large bathroom with an excellent shower. We found the water to be piping hot which in San Cris is a blessing during the cool evenings and mornings. The panoramic views down over the tiled rooftops to the center of San Cris are mesmerizing and the particular view of the cathedral framed by the rooms on either side of the stairs when coming down to breakfast is now firmly fixed in my memory. The little lobby, reception area is lovely and features many thoughtful touches. We particularly liked the little candles which each guest can set into the stone wall, reminiscent of an altar. The on-site restaurant is not only a great convenience but also a real treat. As in all aspects of Las Escaleras the service is attentive and friendly, the coffee hot and delicious. During our four-night stay we sampled virtually the entire breakfast menu and the omelets topped our list of favourites with the chilaquiles a close second. Smiles abound at Las Escaleras, although with the protocols in place for the Covid-19 including facemasks, those lovely smiles were often hidden but reflected in the sparkling eyes of the mask-wearer. And speaking of protocols, we were all so impressed by the levels of sanitary protocols, not only at our hotel but virtually everywhere we went. From thermal cameras at the Tuxtla-Gutierrez airport, to the van driver disinfecting every suitcase, to the general use of facemasks and virtually all shops and restaurants conducting temperature checks and supplying anti-bacterial gels, we felt very safe and protected during our entire visit to Chiapas. One of the very best features of Las Escaleras is the location. Pretty much everything we did and wanted to do was within an easy walk. And yet you are just far enough from the centre of town to enjoy almost total silence at night and early morning for those looking to have a lie-in. We calculated that this was our first visit in almost 25 years and the town has grown, but the charm remains, and many things have actually improved such as the eclectic choice of restaurants, cafes and bars, including some really great dining options. One thing which visitors have to adjust to is the large numbers of street vendors, peddling mainly arts and crafts from the outlying villages, lots of jewelry and a wide variety of trinkets, street food and dozens of other products. Probably due to the fact that they have had to endure very lean months due to Covid-19, most of these vendors are simply deaf to the word “no” but with a good attitude and friendly banter you begin to take it in your stride after a while. Every traveling will make their own decisions on this front but while you want to help every single person, at the end of the day your purchases will trickle down into the economy and hopefully make a positive impact. We visited two bustling markets and my wife loved them. The vast majority of the stall-keepers are far less pushy than the street vendors and with time and a good eye one can pick up some truly lovely items from highly skilled artisans. During stays like this you tend to leave the hotel with a touch of sadness, saying good-bye to those who have made your stay so memorable, people like Rolando, Evelin, Iris, David and the wonderful Chef… thanks to all, we will definitely be back as well as looking out for other hotels in the Inmense boutique hotel chain.
