Oh boy...

Reviewed By miss-Anna-I16

Oh, Boy... As someone who travels a lot, I must say, it takes a huge deal for a hotel to disappoint me. I’m not a very picky person. But anyways... I couldn’t decide on a title: “What a disappointment”? “If only I could give a negative number of stars”? “Waste of money”? All three fit perfectly. So first of all, let me start by saying that this is NOT a 4 star hotel as they claim to be. This place barely qualifies as a motel. The only difference is, motel rooms usually get cleaned. The location of the hotel is awesome, surrounded by green meadows and forests, with cute hiking trails nearby. That much I’ll give them. Originally, we wanted to book a premium room, as we read that they were recently renovated. However, none were available, so we stayed in the basic room. There is no water kettle and no mini fridge, which was disappointing considering they advertise this. No matter, that was not a big deal. The room was depressing. The furniture is so basic and old-looking. Curtains look like they haven’t been washed since the hotel’s founding. The TV looks like one of the ones they made back in the 80s and as most hotels usually have at least one English option, such as BBC World, CNN or DW, this one had none. Let me be clear: for us, a room doesn’t matter that much. We just sleep in it. But we dreaded having to come back here every evening even for sleep. The shower cabin is old and disgusting so you never wanted to shower there either. The girl at the desk said they’re in the process of renovating, having just purchased the property in April and that they’ve renovated several rooms. Then at least they shouldn’t charge a 4 star price nor advertise lavish accommodations for people who are not fortunate enough to get access to a premium room and end up with a basic. Because the basic is not worth what they are charging. Feels like quite a rip off to me. According to the reception, the rooms do not get any housekeeping/daily cleaning because of Coronavirus, and how the state of Saxony-Anhalt does not allow hotel staff to clean rooms, unless the guests stay a week or longer. This is, in fact, not a state coronavirus rule, we looked it up. All the state says is that the hotel should make sure their staff are safe. If this hotel deems it safe to have reception staff and restaurant servers, why can they not have housekeeping? Not even a full housekeeping, but at least to refill the toilet paper and soap, and maybe freshen up some towels. In the 3 days we stayed, not once was our room cleaned. The carpet looked super gross, as if it had not been cleaned in years. I felt too grossed out to walk in my socks so I always had my shoes on. The shower took like 5 minutes to heat up, and the soap/shampoo was not refilled as there was no housekeeping. Towels were not refreshed either. The breakfast overall was pretty good. But the staff were rude. Okay, to be fair, we are living in a “post-corona travel era”, so things are stricter. You have to make yourself known every time you enter the restaurant, which is fine and understandable. But the reactions/tones of the staff are not appreciated. My husband had gone down a bit earlier, signed us in and got us a table, so when I came down, I was just looking for him in the restaurant when one of the staff members yelled at me to wait and how I can’t just go in. When I explained that I’m meeting my husband, she was just like “oh, ok. Proceed.” No apology for her tone or yelling at me in front of a bunch of people, or anything, basically ordering me to proceed, and when I went through the dining room to get to a connecting room where my husband was, she again yelled at me, telling me to walk through the buffet. When I did, the door to the room where my husband was sitting was closed from the buffet side, so I had to turn around and walk through the dining room anyways, so all that drama was unnecessary. And the staff should learn a bit more about customer service. When a guest comes to you at the reception and asks about nearby attractions and whether or not they are open, you should be familiar with that, or at the very least, be willing to find out. But saying “I don’t know,” and not bothering to provide further assistance is unprofessional. Then, my husband and I wanted to have a later dinner and went down around 9:30pm. We were told the kitchen staff have gone home and there was no food available. This restaurant only offers food for breakfast, and a short time for dinner. When we expressed our disappointment, one of the staff members said “why not just have a gin and orange juice, and just add more orange juice? Basically a full meal.” Like... how unprofessional?!?! If a 4-star restaurant cannot provide food, should they not at least pitch in for mini fridges for the room so the guests can store their own food? Oh and on top of everything, they had some kind of construction or some work going on at midnight, which kept us up. Honestly speaking, there must be a lot of work put into this property before it can even call itself anything more than a motel. But to call itself a “resort” is a hilarious joke. If you’re actually looking for a nicer standard of accommodations, steer clear of this place! Waste of money.

Hotel booked by our customer. Five star hotel, not! Beautiful location by the lake, unfortunately we were here in January! Rooms comfortable, however room service only every two days and water in room not replenished! Breakfast very good with good choices. Did not sample dinner as pricing double our business allowance. Nice bar area if you could entice a waiter to serve us eventually!

Clean Room at a Good Price

Reviewed By B M

We booked this hotel for our second night of a weekend hiking trip from Bad Harzburg to Ilsenburg in the Harz National Park. It is not as close to the national park entrance as some of the other hotels, but it's cheaper because of that. The hotel was clean, the corner room we stayed in was spacious, and the rate was cheap (about 76 Euros for the night). We were just looking for a place to stay after a long hike, so weren't trying to find a romantic spot or memorable hotel. It worked for what we wanted. The "average" rating comes from the accumulation of a few small items that some travelers might want to be aware of. First, this hotel is on the busiest street in Ilsenburg (you'd think it was a sleepy little town, but this road is a major thoroughfare) so the room was a little noisy at night due to road traffic. Not so bad that we couldn't sleep, but it prevented us from opening up the windows. Second, there is a 1.50 Euro "resort fee" (or something like that) per person that you have to pay up front. Not the hotel's fault - guests at all hotels have to pay it. You get a coupon book (which we couldn't really use) and it's not a lot of money. Just be ready. Third, the man who checked us in was very pleasant and helpful. The woman who checked us out was less so. As she was preparing our bill, I asked to buy a map they had next to the desk (a nice touch). She had already printed the bill, which she proceeded to tear up after a heavy sigh and a gruff look. I don't know why she couldn't just ring it up separately. No skin off my back - she was the one that was upset, and it was no big deal. But it wasn't a very good lasting impression to leave with us. Finally, and probably most importantly, the restaurant was "closed" while we were there. We inquired about it's availability when we checked in, and the man said "I'll have to check with my wife." Not good. If you want food, it's a bit of a walk to some nearby restaurants. They have another restaurant at a very nice location that we went to where the food was very good. Just not in the hotel. Breakfast was nice, and they open at 7:00 a.m. Overall, an average experience.

Pension Stellwerk

Spacious, airy pension with a mountain view

Reviewed By Christian S

My partner and I stayed at the Pension Stellwerk for 4 days and made that our base for exploring the Harz Mountains' towns and trails. Ilsenburg is a very beautiful area. The Stellwerk building is an interesting old railway station that carries a sense of the history of the area in it. We had the Ilse Room, which is a large, 3 room flat (bedroom, front room, bathroom) with a nice view of the Harz Mountains. The room is delightful, airy and interestingly decorated (themed). The only problem is the seating in the front room, which consisted of only two very uncomfortable chairs. Other rooms in the Pension might have better chairs, I don't know. As a vegan/vegetarian couple, we greatly appreciated the effort our hostess took to provide us with a lot of vegan alternatives for breakfast. She laid us out a spread of soy milk, soy products, fruits, veggies, and breads. N.B. to check in, one must first go to Schroeder's Cafe in town, to get the keys. Also, the Pension is 2 miles away from the start of the Heinrich Heineweg, so figure that into your mileage if you are there to hike that trail. And note that all town parking lots require you to display a parking disc (Parkscheibe), which you can get at a petrol station. We were not informed of this and got a parking ticket.

Nice location, mediocre hotel

Reviewed By kr1sh4n

The good: Very beautiful location in the woods, at the banks of the Ilse river beneath the Brocken mountain. The bad: Wifi only at the front desk, but when I visited, it did not work at all. No mobile reception, either. Staff was inattentive, lacking friendliness. The ugly: My room was very basic, without any charm. My bathroom was spartan. The hallways were stuffy and the interior felt dated and in need of renovation to me. Breakfast quality was only okay-ish. Essentially, booking this hotel makes sense if you are willing to sacrifice all other concerns for an especially beautiful and tranquil location.

Very pleasent place to stay

Reviewed By Christian B

I was here as participant in an educational course. It was a very pleasent place to stay! The accomodation is new, clean and comfortable. The grounds of the monastery have a long history (church dates back to the 10th century) and you can really feal it! It seems to be a small village on its own. Yet outside the walls, you also find the small village of Drubeck. The monatery grounds also holds a small cafe with wine and beer. Very nice. Do try the hasselnut-honey liquor - it is delicious! The only thing keeping me from giving this place 5 stars, is the food. The food was particularly booring and without any nuances througout the week. We could also see the same buffet leftovers being re-used in other dishes a few days in a row. Defintely a fine place to go. Well situated for hiking in the hills and forrests or for courses and workshops. Specially the latter, as they also have a terrific conference "center" with a few rooms and a large garden for networking. Everything seem newly renovated and pristine. Aparently they won an architectural award in 2008 for their way of preserving the original old monastery buildings, while building the new modern rooms within them.

Nice place in the Harz mountains.

Reviewed By BrianArtforAnimals

The only problem we had was finding it as the roads are very confusing with changing names and one ways and all that...BUT as soon as we found it (it had a little sign on the side of the building) we went to the cafe across the street and got our keys and had an excellent night. It is a nice quiet and clean facility. We had a breakfast, chatted with a manager and left for Berlin that morning. The town has a lot of nice little shops and places to eat.
