Fantastic location and staff (except restaurant manager) - disappointing restaurant and bar area

Reviewed By JJSWLondon

This hotel is in a wonderful ski in ski out location in beautiful Hochgurgl. The swimming pools inside and out are fabulously appointed with gorgeous views and even the sauna has a view of the snow! The problems really start when it comes to eating and the Bar area. Firstly for any kind of romantic break the restaurant resembles more a canteen than a romantic mountain setting. It is very large. It lacks any atmosphere or indeed the attitude from the management that we will do our best for you. I hasten to add that the waiters and waitresses were charming but being led by an inflexible impolite restaurant manager. The view from the restaurant is superb - having said that the rigid seating policy meant that we were obliged to sit at the same table for every breakfast and supper. Despite the fact that at least one table was free by the window we were not allowed to sit in it. There was no please do sit at a table of your choice, even at breakfast, and no opportunity to reserve a better situated table for our whole stay. The hours were also very rigid. Breakfast 8-10. We were finishing our coffee on the second day around 10:20 when the manager rudely came up (he is easily recognised as dressed in Austrian traditional uniform and very angry looking) and said words to the effect that we obviously hadn’t changed our watches to local time. In case we didn’t get the point we were informed breakfast ‘ends’ at 10 and we had to leave. A gentler polite suggestion to finish coffee in the Bar area would have made the world of difference to us. We left, a mature couple, feeling ticked off not to mention a little upset. Our neighbours, for all meals, had two sweet very young children. He told us that when he asked about checking out that he would not be allowed a little leeway - 10 it was and no budging despite having young children to organise. This could not be more different to the TopHotel next door where we went afterwards for a further 8 wonderful days. They were flexible and warm about everything from meal times, to tables, with a longer breakfast time and checkout I think at 12 noon. The next thing which was strange was the speed of service of the four courses (or so) dinner. No sooner had you sat down the courses arrived at breakneck speed. It was like a race to get the diners in and out. Not a relaxed experience but rather more like a fast food one. As for the Bar, for a hotel which accommodates a large number of people, the Bar sat around 20. There was an additional lacking in atmosphere or views sitting area with a handful of chairs with little tables - think airport lounge. This meant that having a pre-dinner drink was tricky if you wanted to sit down which after skiing tends to be the case. Thankfully the guests were very accommodating in helping each other out. Room service was also rather hit and miss. As there was no kettle we ordered breakfast tea in the morning. The water arrived, more often than not, in a pre-used coffee pot, adding more than a hint of stale coffee flavour to tea. Not to be recommended. All in all Hochgurgl is a wonderful place to ski and with a few subtle changes this would be a great hotel to stay in. We would mostly like to thank the ordinary staff who were all very charming.

Family run hotel that just gets everything right

Reviewed By MrTrusty

Facilities first class, rooms good, bar great; just what you want-informal and rustic. Staff very good and catering excellent. Location is the best I have come across, close to the donut restaurant at 4500m where you look down on clouds. I went there 10 years ago which is the source of these comments. They do Xmas very well, not over the top and just right. Not too commercial or flashy such as the other four hotels in Hochgurgle. I had my 10 year old son with me who became ill- the staff were very helpful. I write this recommendation for the hotel as I want to go back there this year.

Alpenhotel Laurin, Hochgurgl - a great place to stay!

Reviewed By ayisgroovy

I’m not sure of the low ratings given by some but our experience at the Laurin was excellent! This is worthy of more than the 3* rating by far. We were 2 adults + 10yr child all in one room. Stayed there 02/09April 2022 via CrystalSki and we were warmly greeted by the Lady of the House - Sandra - the room(Superior with balcony) and hotel is very clean and tidy with excellent views looking down the valley toward Obergurgl. The elevation of the hotel is 2000+ metres so almost guaranteed of snowy Christmassy views. The meals were very good - choice at breakfast was good but perhaps a bit repetitive but what else do you expect for breakfast - a good selection of cold meats, cheese, fruit, bacon, eggs, cereals, yoghurts, pastries and bread. The evening meal was really astounding with five courses every evening, the first being a salad buffet, followed by a further starter, then a soup, main course, and finished off with a dessert. I’m a big eater and dinner was enough for me! For R&R off the slopes, the Laurin has a gym and a petite but beautiful pool area with floor-ceiling windows and views down the Obergurgl valley! There’s a sauna and yoga area too. In the main part of the hotel, there is a central bar, well attended, and a lounge area that has smaller divided areas for chilling and a bit of privacy and never felt crowded. Again, here, the lounge areas all have floor-ceiling window views down the valley. We really loved the South-South West aspect as it gave lots of sun into the lounge whilst you’re sipping your drinks on a lounger or rocking chair. Bedrooms were very clean, modern, and very warm, and no complaints. Hot water always available during waking hours. Access to the main GrosseKarbahn chair lift is about an easy 8-10mins walk though it does include a flight of stairs to the upper level. Not found that an issue. On your way to the lifts, there are two ski shops where you can hire your equipment - we went with Scheiber Sports S6 which en route and they have ski depots(ski and boot storage) facilities there which is super handy and means you are not walking in your Frankenstein boots in and out of the hotel, trainers will do. Sander and Gregory at Scheiber were super helpful and nice to deal with. Once we had put on our warm and dry boots, it was a 30sec stroll to the chairlift. Super convenient! On return to the same spot, there is an outdoor rotunda belonging to the Top Hotel where you can a beer or something stronger! All in all, loved the location of the Alpenhotel Laurin and great value for money. Owing to our early departure at 6am on 09Apr, Sandra, the Lady of the House, made us a packed breakfast and some juices to take the night before - very sweet and kind of her! The Laurin is highly recommended!

perfect ski hotel

Reviewed By louisa1956

Had a fabulous week at this lovely hotel. The location is just perfect for skiing. Go down to boot room - open locker- warm and toasty boot-walk to snow cab -30 seconds- get in - up you go- 2 /3 min arrive in middle of our favourite run in Hochgurgl No 33. We had the first couple of runs virtually to ourselves. Didn't feel the need to go over to Obergurgl once. Was also nice skiing past people in the mele trying to get the top express, we just skied another 5 mins back to the safety of our snow cab which was fabulous when the weather came in you knew you could get home easily. The staff are just so lovely, special mention to Josef, Acosh and another waiter whose name I didnt get. They cant do enough for you and are very sincere unlike some other ski hotels where everyone is just looking for tips, which the next hotel we went to in Obergurgl seemed to be only bothered about. The owner Carmen Riml also very helpful and friendly and organised for our luggage to be taken over to the next hotel in Obergurgl in their shuttle. The food was great, salads, fish, meat, vegetarian and childrens choice. Went back for lunch one day when the weather came in and it was absolutely delicious, vegetable curry witht he crunchiest freshest vegetables. This is a family hotel and no large groups. In the evening everyone sits around tables in the lovely bar area and play games. There was live music one night which we missed as we were too tired. One night they had a little sing a long which was lovely. Mainly German/Austrian clientele, think there was only one other english person there but everyone very friendly and chatty and speak perfect english (much to our shame at not being able to be as good). There is table tennis, table football and a tv in the basement.. The tv got live channels from the Uk so could watch the rugby. There is a wellness area but we didnt venture in there. Shuttle to ski school/obergurgl and hochgurgl. Hopefully when the madness of this horrible virus calms down we are able to go back next year and in future years take the grandchildren as this is one of my favourite hotels.
