Absolutely fantastic

I stayed at Hobsons for 5 nights this week and they would have to be the most friendly accommodating people I have met in a long time. The whole place is sparkling clean and nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. It is modern and for a very small town has a lot too offer. Will be back very soon.

Amazing little oasis

This place is amazing! Tucked away from the main road but still close enough to the lakes. The amenities (gym/spa pool/theatre&games room) were excellent! Cherie & Chris were amazing hosts and always made sure we were comfortable. The room we stayed at (studio) was bigger than I expected and had all the basics that you need.

Friendly, helpful and super clean

Reviewed By aubrey t

We felt very welcome and looked after from the moment we arrived on our bikes as part of the Tour Aotearoa. They made sure we were happy with our allocated campsite and suggested the best place to pitch tents so we could put the pegs in easily. We were asked to ensure we wore masks in the shared facilities to reduce the risk of Covid19, very proactive. The facilities were pretty new and sparkling clean, plenty of hot water and even lots of places to charge devices plus a drying rack for clothes. The kitchen doesn't have pots and pans, cutlery etc but had everything else in the way of appliances. Very hospitable and a great stay

Northern Wairoa Hotel

Tired and dated old lady needing some TLC

Reviewed By Rickakl

Dargaville for the weekend. Certainly not a tourist hotspot and itself a town showing signs of a struggling economy and lack of tourist dollars being injected. We chose to stay at the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Impressive from the outside but once you enter the double doors you sense it's heyday has past. No reception to welcome you. Instead a mesh security frame. No sign of any one. I headed into the bar area. Empty but there was noise from an adjacent bar. There the locals glued to the TV watching with drinks in hand hoping it seemed their numbers would come up. I introduced myself to the bar lady who in turn called the manager. We followed him, a young man, outside to the reception area. He checked our details and handed over a key. Nobody took us up to our room upstairs. We opened the door and immediately realised this was nothing like the room we had seen on the website. $130 certainly wasn't acceptable for this room. So downstairs and found the manager again. Another key handed over. This time a better room, however tired and dated. Carpet had a smell of years of smoke. Furnishings old. Might have come from the op shop over the road perhaps? Bed comfortable. TV with all the SKY channels. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room but there was a guest kitchen down the passageway. Rubbish left on the kitchen bench hadn't been removed. Our room had an ensuite. A full bath, green stained from years of dripping taps. A shower over the bath set at a height for children. We had to kneel to wash our hair and upper torso. The shower wall had mould and rot on the base. Handbasin was cracked and had no plug. The walls were very thin. We listened to the neighbours in the adjacent room and when they went to sleep the soothing sound of deep snoring pervaded the evening. Music from another room thankfully ended after about an hour. I slept well.

Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary

Imagine levitating over the forest, resting on your back and contemplating the blue sky contrasting against the lush green leaves of the trees surrounding you. We invite you to experience a different side of the Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary: set-up in secluded clearings, our comfortable tree tents bring you as close to nature as you can get. Nestled in the trees, you can defy gravity and examine closer the hundreds of varieties of moss, the stick insects, and the busy birds. Wake up in the midst of the dawn chorus and have the whole day ahead of you to explore the trails in our jungle-like forest, to participate in one of the conservation activities, to visit the nearby Kauri Coast attractions, or to just pick up a book and spend a relaxing time rocking gently in the breeze. Amazing Octavian

I stayed at Pupu Rangi 5 weeks one year ago already. It was my first international voluntership. I warmly recommend you this place. The location is an experience by itself: Pupu Rangi is situated at a top of the hill, without any wifi and far away from your confort zone. But the experience is really worth it. It's surrounded by marvelous forest, where you will get the chance to see kiwis ?. Octavian will warmly welcome you, he has a big sense of humour, very well storyteller and a good teacher. It's really the best place to be to learn about nature conservation work. Be ready to heard "amazing" plenty of time ? and be touch by this big heart project.

The title was quoted to me upon arrival. I loved that attitude. Owning that space. Loved the facilities. Some reviews say dated. Yes, but there is a charm in dated. All the usual facilities, great shower pressure. Loved how the host Alen, walks you through the room explaining everything. That personal touch says so much.
