The fact that you feel a good bit closer to the sky at the Hotel Krone, in the Vorarlberg town of Au, has to do with its location at a high vantage point in the middle of the Bregenzerwald. But you also feel as if you have found a bit of heaven when basking in the spectacular Sky Spa, high above the rooftops of the village, or enjoying the traditional hospitality of this 4-star hotel.
Extremely overprized for what it offers
Reviewed By XabbuHotel Krone is a rather outdated hotel in Au. At the steep prize-point (we paid about 300 Euros per night) we expected a lot. Unfortunately our expectations were not met. Let me start with the room - we booked a premium room and while we got a large room, it neither had a view, nor was it modern (there was carpet in the room) and the bathroom was extremely outdated. Overall not what I would expect from a premium room. The food was average at best - the breakfast had relatively limited selection and no offers like an omelette or similar. Dinner was poor 2 out of the three days we ate there (soups were very salty, etc). On top of this on two days we had dirty spoons on our table. Again, not what I would expect from such a hotel. The reception staff was lackluster at best. At check-out we mentioned the "issues" we encountered and all we got was an "oh, sorry". No "Thank you for your feedback, we will act on this" or "could we do something to convince you to give us another try". The restaurant staff on the other hand was excellent and very friendly. So, overall our stay here was a pretty big disappointment and I cannot recommend this hotel at the price point mentioned above (at half the price it might be considered acceptable).

The area is like a park and extends like an island below the Danube bank along a natural lake directly on the cycling track Donauradweg R1 (Eurovelo 6) Passau - Vienna next to the cultural metropolis Linz.The adjoining guest's garden is a popular meeting point of both tourists and local people. It regularly turns into a regional cabaret, always conserving the contemplative atmosphere and the gorgeous perspective of the Danube.Nature and culture, tourists and local people, cyclists, people on boats and campers in tent, caravans and mobile homes meet here. Since 2013, we do have cosy lodges and sleeping barrel.
Difficult to fault
Reviewed By WonderingAboutTravelWe were a pair of cycle touring couples heading down the Danube with a mixture of camping and resorts. The camping here was easily the best on the trip. The check-in was relaxed, welcoming and good-humoured. The tent field was absolutely fine with us being left to find our own spot, this we liked. But the highlight was the toilet block - clean, spacious and efficient. We all loved it. No tokens were needed for the showers. The restaurant is good simple fare; bar food up until 8pm and then pizzas until 9pm we all had pizzas and we really enjoyed them, they were excellent. The pricing is fair, maybe marginally on the cheap side, but we paid the bill willingly. It’s slightly more expensive than many other camping sites on the Danube, but it’s worth it. We paid €42 for 2 x tents and 4!x people with bikes. Would definitely go back.

Great for families
Reviewed By lenchen2015We have been coming here for a few years now, and we still love it. Modern hotel, but still very traditional. Nice big rooms for families, and the food is really nice. Great to have a kids club so that the parents can sit down for dinner as long as they want. Also nice with pool, even if it is a bit small. The kids still love it. If you travel without kids, don't go down to the pool just after the lifts close and before dinner. It will be loud. But if you go to the pool after the families have gone for dinner, you will probably have it all to yourself.

Superb Hotel and Restaurant
Reviewed By GLCannonThis is a must visit venue for us and our family on our regular trips to Austria. Never fails to meet our expectations. Very welcoming owners and staff. Excellent restaurant serving mostly traditional Austrian cuisine although international tastes are also well catered for. Good choice on menu and the chef will try and accommodate particular dietary requirements. The hotel is an excellent base for anyone looking for an activity based holiday or long weekend break. Extensive network of well signposted hiking trails, mountain biking and for winter sports the extensive ski areas of Damules/Mellau , Lech/Warth/HochTannenberg, Diedenskopf are easily accessible plus the extensive cross country skiing of Schoppernau/Au

Reviewed By Lisa HI love this guesthouse. Although I speak no German and the team's English is slim, we get by. I have been coming here for a week every February for about 5 years. The 1 year I missed, the Owner asked my friends where I was. The owner, the bar manager and the breakfast room maître d all shake your hand like you a long lost friend - wonderful to come back each year. The meaty stuff - The breakfast buffet offers a wide selection from fruit, muesli and seeds, to gorgeous bread, salmon, cheeses, meats to scrambled eggs and pancakes. The bar is well stocked from gluwein to prosecco. And the rooms are beautiful - so Austrian and alpine - the mural of grazing cattle on a summer's hillside takes up one wall of the bathroom and you feel as if you are in the field!!! Definitely stay here - you will not be disappointed. It is on the ski bus route so very handy. Could do with being on the No. 40 bus route but it's only a short walk downhill from Au.

Reviewed By Henrik BThe restaurant was not open so we walked 300 meter to a nice one. Apart from that the rooms where fine and the service really good and helpful. Breakfast was good and parking just outside your window. The area is quite and safe.

Reviewed By Jan vmore than 50 years after my last visit to Gasthof Schiff me and my wife visited this hotel again. Although there are other owners now, we enjoyed the hotel very much. Friendly people and very good food for a reasonible price. The surrounding has changed since my last visit, but the feeling is the same as it was. Very lovely and very green, where you can make beautiful trips by foot through the mountains. Next spring we will go again.

New year’s week in Au
Reviewed By GhentwinegeekOur second time at Roessle. A very well run hotel that offers charm, style, quality, very good food for a very reasonable price. Hard to beat in terms of value. Michaela is a wonderful host and is almost always around. The vast majority of the staff is female in the hotel and that is somehow reflected in the way the hotel looks and feels. When we were there, there were quite a few families with smaller kids, but all in all a mix of different type of guests. Not a die hard ski hotel, many guests seem to hike or langlauf or just relax and read a book in the lobby. We regularly saw locals dropping by to have a coffee or a beer in the lobby that feels cosy, homely and inviting to read a book. The food is generally extremely good, especially the fish dishes where overall fantastic (which is not always a given in Austria). Portions in the hotel are small by Austrian standards (a plus for us), but there is a buffet salad, and if you would ask, you will surely get more. The winelist is ok, but it seems most guests stick to the housewine or beer (I would have liked to have seen a winelist focusing on female winemakers which would fit perfectly with the hotel style). Downsides of the hotel? Not on the slopes, but access to three ski areas (Warth-Schrocken, which gives you access to Lech/Weisse Ring), Damuls (view on Bodensee) and Diedamskopf (very near, good for a day or two). There is in the morning some noise from the deliveries at the hotel and the bus that passes by, at the back you have the river, but a busier road behind that. At night it is quiet though. There is no pool, but a great hot sauna outside and steambath, infra red and health sauna inside.

Reviewed By Heisenberg1828Spend 2 nights at this relaxing hotel while spending the days skiing in nearby ski resorts. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I highly this place. I recommend calling the owner before arriving/booking as he is very knowledgeable about the area.
