The best available Hostels hotel to stay near Kampala

May 3, 2023 Mollie Coke

Near the banks of Lake Victoria, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is a lively city with a long history. Before the British, the city was the capital of the Buganda Kingdom, and remains so to this day. The city sits on several hills, each housing an important government or religious building. Kasubi Hill is the home of the Kasubi Tombs, a sacred burial ground of Buganda Kings. The Uganda Museum sits atop Kololo Hill, and features a hands-on collection of traditional musical instruments.

An oasis of serenity and support in a busy city, and a gateway to Uganda

We have been visiting Red Chilli for several years for a mix of business and pleasure, and were delighted to find it has retained its atmosphere of friendliness and fun post-lockdown, following the easing of travel and other restrictions. We could not have done our work at Butabika Hospital so effectively without the support of Debbie, Anton, Katie and their team of lovely local staff. Nothing was too much trouble, and with improved internet (including in the rooms) we were able to connect with our colleagues across Uganda. And when work was done we had the friendly bar, home-cooked food (the best pizzas we've ever tasted), and a lovely garden and pool, with great views and many birds, to enjoy. The on-site ATM and easier transport links via the new Kampala ring-road also helped. At the end of our project Red Chilli organised a superb and well-priced mini safari for us, which reminded us what a beautiful and varied country this is, with cheerful, welcoming and resilient people and wonderful wildlife. We highly recommend Red Chilli for anyone visiting Uganda with modest means, and who does not require frills, but wants a multi-cultural experience in an authentic setting.

Luxury Acacia Villa with Kampala's Best View

Easy to find around

Reviewed By CharlieBeau

Acacia Villa is easy to find since it pops up on Google Maps and thus Safe Boda, for example. That's a real plus when you are staying at a new place. I found Acacia Villa on airbnb. (It has a great write-up and lots of room options at this and a second building very close by). I then extended my stay for another few days. I opted for the shared dorm which was fine because most nights I was the only resident. There was a metal trunk in the dorm (tip. Always carry your own padlock with you). Accommodation is quite basic but regularly cleaned. Towels aren't provided (but perhaps you can hire them?) Plenty of water for hot showers; reliable internet. Rates are room only. Breakfast is $4 a day for a set menu EG fruit and freshly made samosas. You can also buy beers and sodas on site. I enjoyed meeting the owner Austin. He is interested in every guest and makes everyone feel welcome, whether expats like me, international tourists or Ugandans returning to visit family. Benjie was friendly and very helpful. Acacia Villa runs a good show. I recommend staying with them and, despite the proximity to Kisementi, it's not that noisy, just a hum of background traffic. Good view from hill. Pretty at dawn!

AVOID THIS PLACE

MY WORST EVER EXPERIENCE. This is CRAZY PLACE EVER which makes zero sense to everyone. I stayed there for 10nights. On the last day, I got to hostel from outside at 10pm. I pushed the buzzer twice and my friend was honking the horn twice. The worker opened the door and said "ARE YOU CRAZY? YOU ARE WITH CRAZY PEOPLE" This two worker were completely high on alcohol and marihuana. I tried to suppress my anger and tried to talk with them to figure it out what problem is. But this guys have completely got insane. They act as if there's no one except them. So I called the owner. But owner has a problem as well. Only one thing he's concerning about is that I'll make a bad review. What I want was their sincere apologize. He didn't seems as though he would apologize about this situation. I've been traveling world 2years. I haven't gotten mad like that night. They should've apologized for this problem, even if I did a mistake! I didn't want to stay with them, I had to change to the other hostel in 12:30AM. DO NOT GO THERE. AVOID THIS PLACE AS POSSIBLE AS YOU CAN. There're the another good hostel called FAT CAT, RED CHILLI, BUSH PIG. Spend money little bit more, stay well.
