Lush Wairarapa, in the southeast of New Zealand's North Island, is about an hour from Wellington. It’s a scenic train ride past Lake Wairarapa to Palliser Bay and the Aorangi Ranges. Explore the forests with birdsong and babbling creeks as a soundtrack. Bask on sandy shores with fur seals. Visit country fairs, pick cider apple and tour vineyards. Day spas, hot air balloon rides and quirky rural golf courses are other relaxing options. Quad biking and rafting offer more up-tempo diversions.

Great birthday celebration

We took our extended family to Parehua for a special birthday. Everything was great, from the warm welcome to the sad farewell. Very comfortable accommodation (we had 3 separate villas) with interesting art and knick knacks, superb beds and comfortable seating. Excellent and attentive service in the restaurant. The beautiful clear nights meant we had crystal clear views of the milky way and stars.

The Royal Hotel

WELCOME TO THE ROYAL HOTEL The Royal’s an historic hotel. If you listen, it’ll whisper to you tales from long ago. It will tell you about times past. When weary travelers who’d crossed the Rimutakas could find a bed, a good meal and a drink before riding into the Wairarapa, the “land of glistening waters”. It will tell you of people who fought for right, for wrong, or did things others thought impossible. It will tell you of soldiers marching past its doors. The Royal will show you its secrets, built in a 1868 if you listen you will hear its age, hear its past. But most of all, enjoy the attention and service you’ll get from a small-town hotel, with a local restaurant and bar Brac & Bow offering old world charm and sophistication. We invite you to be part of our history.

A step back into a Victorian view of the future.

Reviewed By Scott M

This place is utterly amazing. The attention to the décor and fittings is staggering, the owners have done a fantastic job retaining the old-world charm and adding in some Victorian sci-fi with the steampunk elements. It must be remembered that this is a historic building, so it doesn't have wide corridors, and the rooms are not large, and it's alive with the sound of rattling windows and creaking timbers in the frequent windy conditions for the area. But it's precisely that aged character that I personally love. Each room has it's own decorating theme and you can choose from rooms with an ensuite, or a shared bathroom. Personally I'd go for the ensuite because the massive clawfoot bath was a luxury with some epsom salts and bubbles. Unfortunately we stayed mid-week so the restaurant and bar weren't open so we didn't have a chance to experience that, but I'm 100% certain I'll be back to stay again so will try them next time. The owner was a fabulous host, and treated us like special guests. We really appreciated and it was in stark contrast to every other hotel we stayed at during this particular road-trip.

Country Serenity at its best

My wife and I stayed in the lodge for a night to celebrate my wife's birthday. We enjoyed the peacefulness of Gladstone area and the lodge. Unfortunately we could not use the spa since it was shut due to COVID. Having said that, there were plenty of relaxing leisurely activities in the gardens (including the Lamas) that time flew so fast. The host booked us a seat in Gladstone Inn with complimentary transport. The hosts were welcoming and very sociable. The rooms were tidy and inviting. I would recommend anyone who has not been to Gladstone area to pay a visit and stay in this lovely place.
